Anyone know of a GOOD mechanic that has experience with ej22 motors that would be suitable to rebuild mine?? Around the Perth area of course. Also anyone know of a rough cost i should be looking at??

There's two places I'd recommend in a heartbeat, although I don't know how extensive their Subaru experience is...
S & R Engine Reconditioners
8 Pusey Rd Jandakot
9417 4411, ask for Steve
Favazzo Engine Reconditioners
1 Favazzo Pl, Spearwood
9418 1763, ask for Alf or Tits (yes, thats right, Tits!)
When crunch time comes (ie if you take the engine to them) let me come along too, I might be able to get a better price / job because I know them :P

That sounds like a good offer Dave. As a side note I should be able to get the parts cheaper, I worked for Coventrys for nearly 5 years and know several people there who are feeling pretty annoyed with the company at the moment.....waggaclint wrote:ill do it for ya. im a mechanic been in the trade for 17years ive build just about every kind of motor out there from holden red motors to mazda rotors. i worked for subaru for a few years done a few wrxs that was few years ago but an engines an engine there all pretty easy. id be able able to get all the parts at a trade price to.

waggaclint... i think your my new best friend... u sound like you know what your talking about and have the confidence to go with it... HAS to be better than the last mob to rebuild my other engine. I guess above all i want honesty... if something needs replacing i want to know before it's replaced... not like most mechanics that just do whatever and let u know when it comes to bill time.
If i was to get u to do it Clint... what sorta money am i looking at.... i have not yet removed the motor or anything like that... plan was to find someone or somewhere to do it first then get them to take a look at the engine while it is in the car.
Only problem is it blows smoke.... so i guesss i want a minimal approx cost of it just to get it to the stage where it wont blow smoke. And maybe to get a approx of how much it will cost for a FULL rebuild.
I will be honest... i don't have the money yet and i wont expect u to fork out money in advance for parts or anything like that.
Also... i will be removing the motor and i already have some minor parts that would be needed. I can work out the parts costs between Tim and yourself and see which is more benfitial.

This avenue loooks very good to me....
So... assuming there is nothing more wrong with the motor except the rings.... what should i need... I got a good gasket kit through Tim last time which i would like to get again.... i think this included just about everything i would need except the rings... am i right Tim...
I still have left over from the last time my rocker cover gaskets and a brand new timing belt i can use. With the gaskets they will have to be the "tighten once" type... or the engine will have to be removed again for them to get re-torqued.
Head skimming essential? New head bolts and new gaskets.... am i missing anything... Tim.??? anyone??
The rest of the engine seams to be fine although im going to look into some new pullys etc... and i have a near new water pump also. As far as performance mods to the engine i have desided to pass on them... don;t need em.

your on the right track probably throw a set of bearings in it while its appart. id get the heads checked out just in case it always pays to get it all checked out if its apart hey. id put new head bolts in it replace any leaking gaskets etc. just depends on how much money you want spend and how good of a job you want. you really wont no until it all apart.

Basic idea... how long does it take to do the minamal... gaskets and rings.
And how long to do a full jobby? Bearings etc etc??
I guess im willing to spend more to get it done right and properly... but that being said... it's an engine that is over 10 years old so i have to draw a line somewhere.
Im really guessing but...
Parts?? i guess im looking at about $400 for everything??
Labour?? Somewhere between $500 and $1000??
Sorry for all the questions... never really got an engine properly done before.

i would probably need the engine for about a week to do either big or small it doesnt take much longer (only a few hours) to do the whole thing but either way youd have your engine back in about aweek. cost not sure about parts some were around what your thinking Tim would now more about the parts. labour around $500 max no more than that. ill look after ya.

$500 would be a rather accurate ballpark, assuming its gaskets, seals, head bolts and bearings. I'd have to get in touch with my contacts, which I'll do this week.
You'd want to do the water pump while its apart too. Remember the last one!
With the pulleys too, cheapest I've seen new are those 'performance' ones on eBay - same pulleys as EJ20G. They do underdrive though.

Yeah have looked about and desided to pass on the pullys. Thanks HEAPS for the help fellas. Your really helping me out.
Tim that would be awesone if you can see what im looking at for parts through u and when i have a figure i can get the money to your asap (before getting the parts). I will go the bearings as well as u guys have suggested.
waggaclint... i assume your name is Clint... time frame sounds GREAT man. Last engine took 2 weeks for some apprentice to do it and it wasn't right. It will take a week for the clutch i need to be speically made anyhows so thats sounds just fine. Im very understanding so if something happens that makes it take longer i understand... i have a work vehicle so it is really no beef.
Im also very happy with the price so no problems there. Clint... any prefered time u would like to get into this... sooner rather than later or is your diary empty for whenever i get the money??
