L series windscreen surround
L series windscreen surround
Does anyone know what the purpose is of the chrome/silver strip that runs around the outside edge of the windscreen on an L series.
Is it part of the windscreen sealing system/keep the windscreen in or is it cosmetic.
I have rust spots in a few locations along the top of the windscreen which look to have been caused by stone chips turning nastly over time right on the spot where the windscreen rubber and the cars paint meet. Removing the chrome strip would help to get to the probem.

However, they are a damn bugger to get back in though ...

I massaged (ground) the stip back with a small wire wheel in a high speed grinder and cleaned the area up.
I am currently painting the top of the windscreen roof area and will reseal the gap with a windscreen/non acidic sealant when I am done.
I know this is the hard way to do it but I am in no mood/position to pull a windscreen out at the moment. It is coming up pretty good anyway as is.

I had no idea there was even a chrome strip there in the first place. Sure wasn't one on mine when I bought it.
I actually just redid the windscreen with silicon this weekend gone as it was leaking quite badly.

I think mine may be the original windscreen though this is unusual as it is 20 years old and has 315 thousand on it and it is clear to see though with absolutely no chips etc.
The seal sure looks like it is 20 years old though and I would have thought if the windscreen was ever replaced it would have a more modern solid rubber seal and not one with the old chrome strip.
Will take some pics when I am back home on Sunday or monday. (away for work tomorrow and out of town sat and sun)
