L series rear suspension bump stops

Post by Cliff R » Sat Oct 13, 2012 2:11 pm

Can anyone enlighten me on how to get the rear suspension bump stops off an L series.
I know there is the hole above the stops but are the nuts welded and the stops screw off or is a socket arrangement needed to get into the hole and onto the nut.
I cant get a socket of any size to sit properly on the nut either

I would say that this nut is not welded, if it was why is there an access hole?

Maybe you need to use a ring spanner or one of those ratchet spanners to do the job. I've not removed mine - the task you're doing has been on my to do list for sometime now :???:

Bennie
you are right the hole is there for some reason.
A tubular socket spanner is probably the go.
Once I work out the spanner size I will have more direction on how to handle this.

the nut is welded. the bump stops unscrew. Soak the stud in crc or similar, try to remove and dirt on the stud then try to unscrew it with multi grips or chissel.

Using my finger down through the hole I thought I could feel some "roughness" around the nut and thought if felt like weld. Like Bennie logic seems to say the hole is there for something like an offset ring spanner or a medium length socket.
Now I need to get the things off with damaging them.

Getting bump stops off on a scale of 1 to 10 is about -20.
2 hours, lots of course (very) emery paper my trusty $2 oil filter removal strap from GoLo, a full can of WD40 and much swearing.
Method-
Pull the hole caps off above the stops, soak in penterating fluid "soaker" (name your poison) wind some emery around the stop you are working on to give traction, tighten the oil filter strap and start undoing. Once it gets moving turn till it starts getting tight and retighten back the other way. Once retightened spray "soaker" into the hole and under the stop and undo till it gets tight again and repeat sequence.
That really sucked, totally crap job. 20 years was too long to pull these things off and I have'nt even thougt about the 30 year old MY....Not likely too at the moment either.
