Fuel Pump? 1983 Touring wagon EA81

Hey,

I'm having dramas with my wagon of what I think are the fuel variety.

After driving if the car is switched off, fuel seems to drain away from the carbie and the car wont start for a bit.. after pulling off lines from what I thought was the vapour separator and putt them back on sometimes the car would start and run again with no problems. Below is a pic of what I was pulling lines off - I now think this is the fuel pump, anyone car to fill me in?

This component definitely makes pumping sounds...

That is the fuel pump, when you turn the ignition on, it should prime until the needle and seat closes, then the pump will stop. Thats what every MY wagon I ever owned did

Right, I'm almost sure that the pump is failing, not pumping fuel to carbie...

Unplugging and replugging the power supply to the pump got the unit to make pump like noises and vibrate, but only for a second.

Has anyone got any tips on where to get a new pump? Is there a generic pump that I could replace this one with>?

Cheers TOONGA - the first one looks a little dodgy but the next one looks almost like what is in there atm.

Thunder039 - Repco quoted $190 for the pump.

Woooh!

New fuel pump! Car is starting every time and engine starting without as much cranking!

Such a damn relief..

Also hitting the fuel pump with the handle of a screwdriver also worked at a pinch with the faulty one

$140 not as cheap as the links above by any means, however bought and installed today.

Pierburg - is the name branded all over the box. Universal low pressure pump.

Under the hood, just behind the passenger side suspension strut top - It had me confused for a while - I had no idea what it was for a while, thought it was a vapour filter.

The new pump is so noisy - the mechanic warned me... I didn't believe him - but shit. haha at least I know the thing is working I guess.

Ahhh.. I think I have the same problem. I got my old wagon started

but it only runs for 5 - 10 seconds then konks out every time:(. Choke position doesn't seem to change it, motor sounds ok when its going, Seems to be a fuel delivery issue unless anyone can suggest anything else??

I checked mine again today, it is bolted to the underside of the floor pan near the fuel tank, I gave it a few taps with the screwdriver handle and did the same to the carby but same problem, starts ok, runs for 5-10 seconds then dies, same every time. Any ideas anyone?

I took my fuel line off at the pump a couple of time when the problem arose to see if any fuel was getting through, sometimes it would pump sometimes it wouldn't, but with mine you could put your hand on the pump and feel it working (or not working) - I checked it out with a test light and there was definitely power getting to it and unplugging an re-pluging the power supply to the pump would get it making noises.

my problem was intermittent, the car drove well when it did start etc so just took the plunge and got the new pump as I needed it on the road ASAP. If your not in such a rush you could pick up one of the pumps that were linked on page 1? looked like good prices!

Yeah the fuel pump seems to be working, I can hear it, although I haven't actually checked the flow (whats the best way of doing that?). I put new fuel filters in today..same prob, starts then konks out in 10 seconds or so.

I had a helper, but I disconnected the fuel line which came off the pump and went to the carbie and held it into a empty container while a friend cranked the engine over a few times, on some occasions fuel would flow, others nothing.

I'm only new to these cars and mechanical stuff in general so i'm not entirely sure how to undertake further diagnosis.

I also have a new fuel pump after market universal new in box $40 plus post with the gas struts . Leftover from olddog's Brumby fumblings .

Yeah I might try that next (I'm working on my honda postie bike at the moment and having far more sucess), I'm also tempted to see if a fuel pump from an old toyota corolla will work on this suby. Anyone every tried that?
