Well I have my computer back on line ... only took 3 days :(

It started with an ominous repeated 3 beep bios noise, which with an intel board means uh oh get a new motherboard (not really... depending on the bios it was one of 3 things memory video card or motherboard)

so I started by removing the PCI video card and ran the machine on the onboard card , beep beep beep ... stopped the machine checked the ram it was working and in good condition according to my other machine.

put it all back togther and it ran for 2 more days... then beep beep beep, checked everything again nothing ... checked it all again the intel flash screen starts but I can't get to the bios.

So I decide to salvage the hard drives processor and ram and make one computer out of 2. I put the drives into the other working computer same problem and now the other computer boots to the bios WTF...

off to the diagnostic computer plug in the C drive from my desktop and wait... and wait ... time for a coffee still nothing ... ok diagnostic computer tells me C drive is kaput unrecoverable ... thats not a 3 beep code WTF

so 3 days later and much reinstalling later, sees me running a new C drive in my desktop, with a grumpy wife who lost quite a bit of stuff from the old drive even though she has her own drive to save to on the computer ... I lost a heap of subaru book marks but luckily they are on the wiki (somewhere)

the moral of the story make sure you back up wifeys stuff littering the desktop :)

Hmmm, that sucks ... :(

However, you should be able to automate the backup process & make sure it's done at least once a month ( if you're not using it a lot ) or do it more frequently if you use it loads more ... :)

Good luck with finding the old data though, it can be achieved with various recoving programs ... ;)

Bantum if the drive could be read I would use "get back data" or one of may other recovery programs I have, to recover the info but it doesn't boot at all.

this is a sata drive and unlike the old ide drives where you could freeze them or swap the driver board they are very fickle, Im going to see if it is under warranty still and get a replacement.

One last thing have you even backed up 4 terrabytes of information :) I have, you need a 500 gig drive for one back up, so every month I would need to find 500gig.

You only need a 1TB drive to back up 2x 500GB 'backups' after that, you just write over the oldest copy.

Proper backup programs will take long for the initial backup but after that, they just add the extra info that has been added.

I use Allway Sync (an automatic synchronising program) that keeps the latest version of all my files as soon as they are changed and across all 3 computers. Keeps the missus's million photos up to date and a copy on 2 other machines as well just in case :)

Came in handy last week when my motherboard failed on my Desktop. I haven't fixed it yet so am reduced to using a 7" netbook :(

Toonga, you could try running a linux live cd to try and recover some data. You can run it off a CD and drag whatever you find onto a usb stick.

Plug in the drive, run parted magic off the cd and remove any other hard drives to remove the risk of a woops, see what you find.

Would just use a recovery program if the drive would boot but it doesn'tdoesn't boot so even with a linux live disc it still wouldnt show up.

for the record guys I'm not a newbie with these things, I got an Itanium server to run when a computer tech of 20 years couldn't :) and to this day I still shudder when I think about it.

This is what I have, but with about 10Tb, maybe more data :D Works well.

I found part magic and out of curiosity I tried it. the drive kept giving error 16 and eventually linux booted without mounting the drive.

Which I thought would happen but I wanted to try :)

Nice one to add to the collection for drives that are recoverable or partitionable :)

No problems. Not many people are aware of it but it does have a memory test function to test the RAM and will also boot with no hard drive so it can be quite useful.

I have had a hard drive fail with photo's on it so I looked into getting them back quite seriously. A last throw of the dice is to put the hard drive in the freezer overnight to try and fix it temporarily. If that fails people will sell working silicon boards that will fix it if it is a ROM problem - not related to the read heads or actual mechanics of the drive.

I guess it all comes down to how much you want the stuff back and how much you are willing to pay for it. If you go on a shooting rampage in the USA you will have some great forensic minds working on getting your data back but you might also end up on death row.
