can I use my phones net via PC ?

Post by steptoe » Wed Jan 09, 2013 12:16 pm

OK, been suggested by some I think know better than me in here....use my android fone to connect it to my PC and use my phones internet connection and allowance through my PC

I have got instructions on how to tether it to PC by cord USB etc or wifi is also a possibility.

When tethered by cord I did not get much, clicked on something and it looks like maybe my phone has now got GIMP from my PC - serious ? Maybe my PC got GIMP from my phone. GIMP is not what I want - I want to be able to get a browser for the net on my screen PC and use its keyboard, soak up some of my phones 5M of credit rather than try on its pissy little screen and keyboard, ditch my PC isp and save some subie moneys
Any assistance will help me with huawei U8350 android

yes you can. Im not sure if your phone has 'hotspot' capability. If it does you can hotspot your phone to a laptop using wifi.

Or else theres normally a 'internet pass-through' or similar option when you first connect your phone to the computer thru USB.

much easier to figure it out in person than figuring it out with typing.

In wifi there should be an option to use connect via usb tethering you must have the cable connected to both devices then select usb tethering and you will then be able to suck the 5mb out of your phone

Depends what kind of phone you have.

I have an iPhone 4, it has its own WIFI that I can connect my iPad or Laptop via wifi to my iPhone to use the internet, I have 3gb data on my plan - pretty handy.

Get an iPhone of some sort already!!!!!
4 hard buttons, home, on off, volume up, volume down. And then a switch for silent.
The iOS user system is really simple and easy to use! (Even I can work it :) hahaha)
Just simple and strait forward.
You won't regret it.

poor advice. Android is very user friendly and only GIMPS with iphones who arent willing to try anything new say ios is easier. Be realistic! phones of any make arent hard to use. People make them seem hard to use becuase they arent interested in learning.

Jonno; i just googled your phone, it says it has wifi hotspot capability.

does your computer/laptop have wifi capability? if it does, i can walk you through setting up wifi hotspot really easily.

I hotspot my motorola tablet to my playstation for online gaming, it only runs 3G and works really well. Suprising really.

ah,,,, it has wifi out but as you ask the PC no has wifi in , which is why I tried to tether it.

Has to be some way to slurp it up - the 5 GB. I tried my PC net disconnected, just tethered phone to PC and clicked on my mozilla firefox and got the timer circling backwards and very slowly - so something is happening.

My PC is dodo who use the optus wcdma. optus won't even try to supply as they know it will not be reliable in my location. dodo has confirmed I am in a grey area - turns black in 200metres south. Optus is sometimes very slow on the phone here, and wonderful in some other weird remote places - might be the problem for the tether.

To be fair to those offering tech help, I need to take notes and pics of what comes up on screen as I go - all in good time. I'll bump it when I am ready. Thanks guys

1. disconnect your computer from your normal modem / router /dongle / internet providing device

2.connect your phone to the computer and the USB cable, (it must be connected for the tethering to work) then in settings find tethering and portable hotspot, select that

3. then in the menu that opens, select / enable USB tethering. the software will install automatically and you will then be tethered to the computer.

4. You will now be able to use the phone as your network.

hope this helps I just used my phone to give you this walk through

OK, thanks for reading and contributing.
One question - do I need to do all four steps each time I hook phone to PC?
Oh, and another one question regarding 'disconnect modem' _ I use a dongle in the USB port for WCDMA - remove it from USB port ? Or just not call it up ie not click on its icon?

Previuosly the attempt was done with tethering command given befor connect to PC - may have been the error

OK. Clicked on disconnect for my dongle.

Connected phone by tether USB cord

settings, wireless & network, tethering & hotspot, usb tethering ticked got rid of first foto above.

Got a "found new hardware wizard"

asked if I got a install CD with hardware install now - I didn't have install CD or any software so folled instructions to connect to internet via dongle and allowed windows to look for stuff

I searched for then downloaded the driver for you phone just then and it is the driver in the picture below

click on the green icon and it will install the drivers for the tethering process (but you must make sure your phone is just connected the way you did it the first time you got to those files) or copy the drivers to your desktop and go through the tethering process again when you get asked for the drivers browse to that folder and hopefully it will install

Image

(not sure why those photos werent there when I looked at this thread yesterday)

you should now be able go through the tethering process and hopefully you will be able to use your phone as a modem / internet device

hope it works this time

Jules it is either old age or the kids causing that :D
Actually, my clock is 3 hours ahead of yours and I started it about 7.00am my time today!
Thanks I wil give it a go when time allows - already wasted time with .TS file getting it off my set top box external hard drive, download file reader successfully, now will be trying conversion to mpeg or jpeg and save it. Then may be time to try pdf reader download successfully after three crap tries.
thanks
