If you need to use the car everyday, I'd suggest you buy a secondhand (known good one) and fit that, then you can rebuild/rekit your one at your leasure.

Call KPM Industries (aka Guyph) and see if he has one. If not try Gumtree

Thanks Paul. I might just book it into the mechanics and get them to look at it and tune it up.

Don't think it's a dizzy issue.. more likely a carby issue

It sounds like carb or vac leak.
Are all the hoses in the correct places?
If its in the carb, it seems to be in the idle stage, you can do a "bushies" reverse flush.
Take the air cleaner lid off, have a rag big enough to block the top of the carb. Rev it to about 4000rpm, then cover the top of the carb with rag, at the same time give it full throttle. Leave the rag there until it gets down to about 1500 rpm, remove the rag and control the revs with the throttle. It will self flood/reverse flow the air jets, flushing them out.
So when remove the rag, it will be flooded, if it stops, crank it with full throttle to start.
Do this a couple of times is all thats required.
Carefull, it can backfire whilst doing this if you do not seal the top of the carb properly, so be ready for it, do it properly, no backfire.
Cheap and easy to do.
L serious, still.

I had this on my MY wagon, it was worse in the cold but once it warmed up it nearly always went away. I always thought it was something to do with the pre-heating at the manifold i.e when the engine/water was cold there was no pre-heating of the fuel vapor going on, maybe causing the issue.

*Edit* just read above, vacuum leak also a possibility
Will it ever end!?

Thanks guys,

I had some success this morning. First I got a can of carby cleaner and sprayed it all around the vac hoses like Steptoe suggests in another thread. No rise in idle, no apparent vac leak.

So next I got the carb cleaner and gave the inside of the carb a good blast. Focused mostly on the idle jet. Then, with the key in the accessories position, I disconnected/connected the wiring harness to the carby and made sure the idle solenoid valve opened and closed (you can hear it click). Did this a few times to make sure it was free. Then I removed the Pcv valve, cleaned it out, and replaced.

Started her up and she is idling happily at around 800-900rpms. There is none of the surging or spluttering that I was having yesterday. Took it for a test drive and the revs held when coming to a stop and putting the clutch in.

Hopefully something of the above sorted it. I will keep driving it for the new few days and see if it stays happy. Will let you know.

Cheers,
James

The plot thickens...

After twenty mins of driving, I slow down in neutral and it conks out and won't hold an idle. It went from idling perfecting to spluttering and stalling again.

acutally, come to think of it, it has done this a few times. Idled perfectly in the driveway but as soon as it heats up (driven for 20mins or so) the idle starts stuffing around. Could a temp sensor have something to do with this? I have spare parts to test with.

Running fine again this morning. Definitely only seems to be only a problem once it has warmed up...

Inlet manifold to head bolts loose or gaskets leaking?
Common vac leak point or coolant into the inlet ports as the engine warms up and the cooling system pressure come up.

Sounds like your carby is getting enough full to idle but not enough to run the engine at higher RPM. I would check/replace your fuel filter and check the output pressure on your fuel pump.

And on the water temp side, how's the radiator level been?

I replaced fuel filter about 4 months ago. The engine does rev and run at higher rpms fine though. Only when it drops down to idle when warm does it start to splutter.

It is running quite cool at the moment. Ranges from 1/8th of 1/4 on the coolant temp display.

How would I check the output pressure of fuel pump?

To me, it still all sounds like a carby issue.

Sorry I meant what is the coolant level like in the radiator after a the run?

To check the fuel pressure, you'll need a pressure gauge...
