credit card scam alert

Got a text just now claiming to be the Commonwealth Bank asking me to ring a 1800 #, quote this number or if OS ring another # , suspecting same friends as those that tell me I have won enough to settle Greeces debt to the EU , I ring Comms 132221 number, identify myself to find it was a real alert.

3.30 am a $2.65 tester charge went against my account then WHAM - a bigger purchase came through maxxing out my card and more from some perp in the US, alerting The Bank and canning my card and those transactions.

Have heard of this before where a poor bird was travelling, copped a $1 test charge followed by a bigger one and WHAM she lost access to all travel expenses being paid - away from home and work - when her card had to be cancelled.

I know paypal use a $2 tester.
Funny how I was telling bank I hadn't used the card in a while until she reminded me of a monthly sting was about to clock up, and I paid for rego yesterday and a muscle alignment - also yesterday

How bloody hell , it is such an automatic use of the thing, time to tear it up ! Well, the new one when it comes anyway

Gotta love the banks technology !

Gave up on credit cards, especially with online being used a lot, got a debit card instead. Can control its balance many ways, makes it a bit harder to be scammed.

It's good that you noticed the charges happening, some people wouldn't even notice until some prick on the other side of the world is living big on someone else's money. Debit cards are great!

...when you remember the PIN correctly and don't get your card deactivated by accident

I hate how they decide the number for you, I had the right digits just in the wrong order 2 wrong guesses and bam no more card. Have to go to the bank to get it sorted out now

You can go to the Bank and have any set of numbers you like coded onto your card, it takes about 5 - 10 mins, I had it done to my M/C.

Same here.. a lot better option in my opinion and not as many charges.
