EA81 mild cam

Post by Tweety » Mon May 27, 2013 6:23 pm

I've read threads where the knowledgeable Steptoe and others have mentioned benefits of a 16/56 cam regrind for EA81's with overall performance improvement.

Now I was wondering when I recoe my spare EA81 if such a cam would be of benefit. Engine will have new larger pistons,EA81 SPFI, larger valves (has blue rocker covers), some head work if possible (porting) and later on a good chance it will get the SC12 blow through supercharger with 5psi but up to 8 psi will be considered.

Seeking reliable, torque at low revs, economy, has auto trans. Not seeking power at high revs eg am not a lover of revving engines high.

Your thoughts

torque to a cam supplier/machinist. you want towing torque . from my understanding porting is for higher end stuff, so too larger valves ? one of the machine shop engine builders years ago told me EA81 and 2 had decent size valves anyway and no need to go bigger - the later EA81 had bigger valves , about 1.0mm bigger ? :D having just driven my 20/60 cammed EA81 with trailer definitely do not do 20/60 ! The 16/56 seemed to love loads and hills !

thanks jonno. yeh was thinking 16/56 is the way to go. and now you have also given direction that allows for the heads to simply be recoed without the extra work, seems like an economical rebuild coming up. Standard compression too as will eventually boost.
