T'was doing a bit of research and came across this :

ALBINS LOW RANGE 2.5 FORESTER : 1.58:1


INPUT GEAR = 20
MATING H-GEAR = 22

H-DRIVING GEAR = 16
MAIN DRIVEN GEAR = 23

Note: Always driven divided by driving
Multiply 1st ratio by 2nd

I.E. 22 / 20 = 1.1
23 / 16 = 1.4375
1.1 x 1.4375 = 1.58 : 1

Here come's the hard bit - Ouch:

LR-053 1.58:1 LOW RANGE GEAR SET FORESTER & OUTBACK = $1 595.00
LR-053 1.58:1 LOW RANGE GEAR SET FORESTER & OUTBACK FITTED = $2 200.00

So if you're in to that sort of thing, might be worth sourcing one if they're still available ... :)

scorpion dont sell these anymore. You might be able to approach Albins but i doubt they will want to manufacture a one off

I've said previously, I've got the design in my head that will work if someone who's good with the finer details could nut that out. The real problem is that at the end of the day it'd cost a pot load more than the above and I reckon people would not like to do it simply due to this - it's a limited market to begin with unless you could work out how to tap into the US market with willing buyers.

Just go with the L series low range conversion. Although, they're starting to disappear from the roads slowly too.

Yes - the main reason I put this up is that I'm looking to draw it up for my Fuji Tractor ( more on that later ) ... :D

For the amount of effort to build what you're talking about, you're better off getting an automatic built properly like vincentvega did.

Toast? Nothing a full rebuild wouldn't cure. If you read the specs on that transmission, it pretty much is as good as it gets for Subaru. The only downside might be the power-sapping/fuel consumption. Once you've used a decent auto offroad (or in traffic, at the drags trip or towing) you'll never go back to a manual.

Stuart is right, there is nothing wrong with my auto that a rebuild wouldn't fix. I am only going manual as I need a change. The car is my daily driver and I have been driving it a LONG time.

I know the manual wont be as capable offroad, but i'm more into touring these days anyway. I will be leaving the auto loom intact so I can go back if I ever need to.

Offroad I still think my auto was one of the best offroad setups around, even with the limited power of the EJ22. On road though its thirsty, power sapping and rough. Problems of a 20yr old gearbox design that you don't have with modern boxes.

The 5 speed auto in Brett's outback with paddle shift is beautiful to drive. There is no way I would want a manual over one of those.

brett has a STI 2.5L turbo outback with a gen4 GT legacy gearbox. There is no lack of power :)

vincentvega, if it was behind a 5 or 6 speed manual the car would be twice as fun... ;-)
Everyone to their own, both auto and manual have it's pro's and cons. It also depends what the car is and what engine is behind it..

Yeah I don't like the bit about it being thirsty on road - I've built my subi for an all rounder and I love driving the manual, especially offroad.
