Cruise Control, rough idle

Post by Tuckerman » Fri Jul 07, 2006 8:14 pm

I have a 1990 GX AWD Auto Wagon. If I turn cruise control on while the car is in park or neutral the car idle goes up and down in an unusual manner. Is this normal ? If not what would be causing this ? I also have a Turbo RS Sedan which idles fine when in neutral with cruise control on (although this car is manual so I thought it may be something to do with the Wagon being auto.)

When you say the cruise control is "on" in Neutral or Park, can you be more specific? Do you mean setting the speed to 0 km/h?
Monster Subaru sold to a good home!! Still a Subaru owner. Will try stay in the Ausubaru loop. Sorry

GX wagons all have factory cruise.

there is a button you press to enable it (like most cars)

I assume this is what he means by "on"

you cant set the cruise under about 55kph anyways

Thanks for the replys. Maybe I should clarify my description a bit more! yes it is the factory cruise control, by on I mean the button on the right hand side of the dash that you must press before you can use the stalk on the steering wheel to set a speed.

When the car is at a stand still and in either park or neutral as soon as you turn that button on the dash on the car idle surges up and down (by a few hundred revs) and sounds very unhealthy. The cruise control works fine in every other respect.

On my manual I can leave that button engaged when the car is at a standstill and in neutral with out it idling unusually.
