Rebuilding EA82
Hey, I'm thinking of purchasing an EA82 block and rebuilding it and I want to know the differences between the EA82 and EA82T. I've got an EA82T so I was thinking I could use most of my manifolds, turbo, exhaust etc. Is the main difference the pistons because of the lower compression?

Im pretty sure the blocks for carby, turbo MPFI and n/a MPFI are all the same. From memory the oil return for the turbo runs into the drivers side head?? The pistons would need to be turbo Pistons to get the correct Comp ratio.

Any particular reason for wanting to build a new engine? Please note that "Just because" is a perfectly acceptable answer in my book
having done up a new motor into my wagon just because.

you need to get a block that has the baffle plate behind the flywheel and the extra breather at the rear near turbo - means carby block will be out.. Turbo heads are essentially std mpfi heads with oil feed and drain drilled into them and genuine valves were different for exhaust. After market does not recognise differences between turbo and NA exhaust valves.
I can unnerstand wanting to build up another engine - so you can do an exchange in shorter time, and you'll know it's all been reco and nothing to go wrong. Go genuine head gaskets, seals etc

Thanks steptoe. I was thinking of doing a block and then when it comes time to swap them over I could take my heads off the old block and get them machined etc. also don't like my chances of getting a EA82T block in Tassie. Bit of luck I can find one around the Melbourne area and maybe get it shipped depending on price.

Wondering if anything internal is different due to the redlines of NA 5500 and turbo 6500.
Someone even had the fortune of finding they had an EA82 mpfi NA engine fitted with turbo heads, so dropped it in an RX, detuned it to suit an assumed higher comp ration ( 10 DBTDC instead of 20) and got a strong puller - that later may have spun a bearing
You may just need an mpfi block
