Rubber gaskets?

had my fair share of oil leaks over the years and am fed up. the vW auto trans is another one that leaks. new cork gaskets like the EA81 sump and a few months later out comes the oil again.

A few guys in USMB are using rubber. We in Oz can get Nitrile rubber 3mm thick from clark rubber. Apart from needing a mortgage to buy the stuff, I used it on my supercharger between the carbie and the sC and the sC to the custom manifold and worked well.

What do you guys think?

Genuine rubberised cork (or is it corkerised rubber?) sump gaskets from Subaru have been good to me without any sealant like I was used to. I do 'em up gradually to factory spec of about 5 ft/lbs with an inch pound torque wrench.

ok Jonno, good.

The other thing is that Watson Race Cam must be out of business. Rang the number 07 55937722 and its not connected. also web address no connection. Do you or anyone else have a cam guy that is real good at grinds?

Oh, bugger, Ian has been in the game at least 40 years, so maybe pulled the pin. I thought the next generation was into the business. Surely a Melbourne or Adelaide base machine shop can orjanise a .235" lift 16/56 grind on an old dinosaur

I know there is at least one place in Adelaide that still does cams but afraid I couldn't tell you the name of them :???: The one in my twin port got a lick to clean up some pitting.
Will it ever end!?

Took the heads off today then decided to lightly bolt them back on and let the engine reconditioner do the cam, rebore and shave the heads. Cant be bothered taking the cam out lol.

Anyway here are some pics of the cylinders and heads. I noticed that on both head gaskets the lower left in the pics, that the gaskets have a burn mark towards a coolant hole. When the gasket was freed the burn mark was on the heads and the block. I think it means that soon the gaskets would have failed. (?). The cylinders arent bad. The score you can see in number 3 cylinder is the worst of the 4 and it isnt dipped at all when you run your finger over it. I still want a rebore- want a brand new donk.

The valves look good but dont know about the valve guides. Here are my thoughts as to instructions to the engine reconditioner, feel free to comment-

16/56 cam but will supply him with all specs to calculate the ideal cam
Full rebore with oversize pistons 20 or 40 thou
Remachine crank
if possible replace water outlet tube top of block
Balance
Reassemble the block
New head studs (bit rusty)
New valve guides
Valve grind replace valves if necessary
Assemble heads to block

In the meantime I have to get made an adapter 38/38 Weber to SPFI manifold, water pump is near new, new oil pump in transit, seeking new oil sedner (frog doesnt ahve them available) or somehow test the one I have.

Thanks to Toonga for the link to a usa site for a new oil pump.

Decided to ge the engine blasted then coat it with clear ( El Freddo's idea). would love chromed rockers but can be done later. got couple of spare green ones can strip myself. Red ones like Doug's would look ok with a yellow body.

No problem.

When younger about 42yo I worked in security and did 12 hours shifts midnight to noon and noon to midnight, 2 of each for 4 days then 4 days off. On my days off I'd work 3 days 12 hour shifts security in Melbourne and hour away. This while I built my own house near Seymour.

One morning around 7am on my way home I stopped at Kalkallo outside Melbourne. Went to sleep, had the seat reclined and mouth agape (a snorer).

Bang bang bang...woke up to see an ambulance guy and fiddled half asleep to find the ignition to wind down the electric window.

Yeh...I yelled
"we got a call to report you were dead." He replied
"Well I'm not" I said
A policeman was behind him. The cop asked me what I've been doing the last few days. I told him. He said "you look crap mate...you better slow down and take some rest"

I did, I was single then and working so hard it all became automatic.

As I have a hole for an O2 sensor and a 2 wire sensor, can this be of any use to eventually measure the richness of my new engine? in simple terms?

You can get a kit from Jaycar to make an exhaust analyzer, sensor not included. Puts out a number in real time high being lean low being rich or some such. I plan to get one soon to make sure I get my Weber tuned right.

Thankyou silverbullet and Steptoe. you guys are great.

Yes, I always tend to check Ebay nowadays first.

Good info though, might make jetting easier.

Let me know how hard the jaycar unit is to make up silverbullet.

Tony;)
