Hi guys - I am looking at buying an 82 sportswagon (1800) with 111,000 kms in generally good condition (bit of rust in bottom of doors) -- I have offered $1000 -- have I offered too much ??

Registered and/or RWC ? If unregistered I would say you would expect to pay no more than $400 for a stock unit with rust.
1989 Brumby - Shiny new red paint, stroked EJ20 phase 2 SOHC with Darton sleeves bored to EJ22, Wiseco high-compression pistons, Delta 2000 grind cams , EJ/XT6 5 stud with WRX 4/2 pots, 5-speed, 86 GTS seats and so much more.

Registered - no RWC in SA - seems to have been looked after mechanically - low range g-box - about 4000kms a year !

I'd pay that if it is in good condition, but not a dollar more. If they accepted less than that it would be pretty nice.

Before anyone says "I'm dreaming" I suggest you come and live in SA for a while and compare used car prices with inter-state.
Will it ever end!?

Not wrong about used car prices in South Oz, I know dealers in NSW who make a living just ferrying cars down there, Repair cost plus rego and the Green Slip scam in NSW means many quite OK easily fixed cars get scrapped.

I remember working with a Mate in his servo about 6~7 years back and a tidy maybe 8 Years old civic got towed in with a blown head gasket, the owner asked for a quote not that expensive and decided to come and get the plates cash in the remaining rego about 8 months worth and was then only concerned with getting rid of the car from the shop without it costing him money.

Used Cars with work needed in NSW, Unless they are something special they are worth nothing up here people just go and put a replacement car on tick with the dealers.
