WA Clutch L Series
WA Clutch L Series
What sort of clutch should i be bying for my L series, and do i need to know any special about changing it (i remember something about aligning it that might be tricky).
I've got a few quotes for around 250-300 to supply the kit, and then around $500 to replace it. Anyone know where can do better than that? If it was under $500 i'd probably take it in instead of doing it my self.

I got an Exedy kit for $300. Aligning it is only tricky if you pull the box out under the car, if you take the engine + box out you can just do it up a little bit, put the box back on the engine to align the disk, then do it up tight. That's a whole lot harder to do upside down holding a gearbox! Luckly when I did mine I had another input shaft lying around that I used to align it.

i think the place i got the quote from were going to pull the engine out instead of the gearbox so $500 is probably reasonable for that. But i'll keep looking. otherwise ill just pull it out myself and get really annoyed with not being able to align it until i hit it with a hammer and it goes back in.

always can try getting a kit for a good price then some dinks and a bbq and some helpfull people, then watch it get installedmattims wrote:i think the place i got the quote from were going to pull the engine out instead of the gearbox so $500 is probably reasonable for that. How can anyone have trouble aligning a Subaru clutch?
Line it up by sight as best you can, FINGER tighten the pressure plate bolts, then install the gearbox or motor. Tighten the pressure plate bolts through the starter motor hole.
Simple job Matt. If you give me $450 I'll do it in my driveway and supply all parts. I'll take between 3 and 5 hours, I don't press myself on weekends. I'd prolly do it the engine way too, I don't like stuffing with gearbox linkages.
Clutch kit part number is R397N, the WA crew used to all run the RPM397 equivalent but now I beleive some bloke in Osbourne Park is building tougher units for us.

Maybe it is worth seeing the Ossy Park guy matt... He is doing my clutch for the hatch.... rebuilding the old one which much tougher gear from different cars... costing about $270. Price has gone up a little. Remember im running an L series clutch too.
Fitting isn't too hard when u know how... much easier with that baby ea82 in there.

on further inspection. I've killed this engine too. (head gasket gone) well it pumps lots of coolant out the exhaust as soon as you put the radiator cap on. So im not going to bother with the clutch. Will have to get a new engine.. or rebuild this one.. either way clutch is the least of my concerns.

Matt, we should talk some time. I have an EA82 that I was basically going to throw away, yes its the one that I got from Vidler. It doesn't tick or anything, only concerns I've had with it are to do with the carby and the rocker cover gaskets leaking.
I want the Weber, the adaptor plate and the alternator, everything else is fair game.
Cheap too.
