Remove one side of the front casing, then undo the 3? bolts holding in the input shaft. It should come straight out then.

The case has be split in order to get it out, the input shaft has a gear on it (D/R)

Have been using an input shaft for just that purpose, works great.

If you're a real Subaru dude you don't need a clutch aligning tool, you just do 'the trick'. I talked about this in another post just recently.

Hint: the starter motor on a Subaru is on the gearbox side, this is not the normal spot for one. It allows access to certain bolts that you wouldn't normally be able to get at, thus the existence of clutch aligning tools.

I just hacked the ones I have off the front too. Then I welded a piece of pipe cut from some old handle bars to it about 4 inches long and then slid an old handle bar grip on to it. "Looks like a bought one" and is harder to lose and easier to get out of the spigot/clutch when you got greasy/oily hands.

If you really want to show off get some BMX free style grips. You will look ful-sik then. :)

Yeah i know the "trick" Tim... i belive i was the one who told you about it. We only decided to make and use a tool cos we had a stuffed gear box sitting there so it seamed like a good idea.

BUt i must admit... if u have an old broken box sitting around its well worth doing.... although the "trick" does get the job done.... having a perfect alighning tool makes the job much faster.
