Just a word of advice from someone who has entered - and come out alive - of the jungle that is the red tape of modified car registration
I have recently converted my registered L-series leone from 2WD to 4WD and have added a 2-inch lift kit and 195/75/r14 tyres.
The car is registered in Victoria, and after the mod was complete I drove it around for about 6 months with no hassles - the car looks big, but not silly enough to attract too much attention from the fuzz. There is no problem with doing that however even with a simple modification like mine - I haven't increased the power, and L sedans came out as 4wds anyway, a 50mm lift is acceptable as well - if you have a prang, your insurance company will pull out, if they see you've modified the vehicle - and whats more, if you injure someone, you will not be covered by TAC which is included in your rego because essentially your rego is void.
This is fine, if you are willing to take that risk
However, you can get it certified by an 'VASS' 'vehicle assessment signatories scheme' engineer, they inspect the vehicle and fill out a form declaring that the mods comply with all the relevant road standards.
In Melbourne - this costs $600 bucks for the first inspection, and if you have to fix things up they are not happy with, it could cost more!!.
I ended up paying the $600 because I got the lift kit for free off a wreck, and wasn't entirely happy with its integrity, and my old man wouldn't shut up about the damage I could do if I had an accident.
Now back to the original post..... sorry
If you were to stick an ej20t into a registered MY series sub, this would be fine, you already have plates, and the cops would be none the wiser. However, if you had an accident, the shit would hit the fan. forget insurance for your car, you wouldn't be insured for any property or personal damage that you caused.
If the vehicle is unregistered, then this is a different story again. If you were to complete the mod, you would then need a roadworthy and they wouldn't give it to you without your VASS cert, and you would attract a lot of attention without any plates on. However, technically, you are no more illegal than if the car had plates, just more likely to get busted.
Secondly, I have seen a lot of posts here regarding conversions to EJ20ts and I am curious to know if anyone has been able to certify there mods.
Sorry about the long post, I hope I haven't dented your chances of selling the vehicle OBZELITE...
PS. This info may apply to VIC only ...

ej20t rego in nsw
just to let any perspective buyers for your car. in nsw this can be reg. i know because mines been on the road since april. I had bought a $650 unreg brumby and started from there. once done (1 year + 3 months later. was surpose to take 3 months!) i got an engineer to have a look he passed it no probs first go. next step blue slip probably one of the easiest ive got to date i think he was more interested in takin it for a drive than any thing else! lets just say he came back from the brake test with a smile on his face and told me i was going to have a lot of fun with it.
One bit of advice i can offer spend your money wiesly eg. dont buy a $1000 frount mount intercooler and leave the stock suspension or brakes on the car.
now i know your all going to ask about my brumby and want to see pics witch i have heap from the build up. but im only average on this computer thing so i need some help on how to post pics.
mods include wrx motor+gearbox(93 import),wrx suspension frount and rear(before any one starts thinking you cant put the rear in i did i got the complete disk to disk rear end with the half cut and did lots of fabrication work in the back to make it work.eg you would all know there is no strut towers in the back of a brumby but that didnt stop me. any thing can b made with a mig if you put your mind to it.)brake are all wrx because i used the rear end this didnt prove to be a problem and the frount hubs off the wrx were used as well. basic bolt on with minor mod to the lower control arm hole needed to be made larger to suit ball joint. frount struts of rex were used with noltec camber castor adjusters bolted on the top and a few new holes made in the towers to suit 3 stud strut tops.
I could keep listing things but later when i post pics ill answer any Questions.
this all comes together as one seriously fun package! lets just say when im taking it for a blast on the old pacific hwy between syd + gosford and i come up behind a speeding motor bike they normally look over there shoulder click back a few gears and stick it. next time they look im still there and there just shaking there head tryiny to work out wat the f$%k this thing with the bullbar up there ass is.
