legalities

Post by Subafury » Fri Sep 15, 2006 1:43 pm

i wanted to dispel some myths id heard of so i went down the local pits and asked em a couple questions. (i parked around the corner just to be safe :p)

we didnt really have a convo coz i dont think he really wanted to talk to me but he answered simply.
i asked if pod filters were ok by themselves? and the dude said yep. full stop.
turbo conversions are ok without any documents? yep. and intercoolers etc?yep. i was thinking of putting in a 3"/75mm lift kit, can i do that legally? only 2"/50 mm is legal (as i knew). what about with certification? and he gave me some papers to fill out and said fill these and send em to us and u might be able to have it.
but im thinking they might put it on file, so they know what to ping me for next time. wat do ya reckon?
anyone know facts about other legalities?

what pits did you go to??
its funny the different stories you get from the different people...
i spoke over the phone a few months back to the guy at welshpool as i am some day gonna put in a 98 wrx driveline into my 96 impreza hatch, and was told that yes the pod filter is ok as long as it is secured completely..
to put the engine in i would have to get permission first by filling out a vehicle modification application for production vehicles form, get it approved and then i may do it..
blow off valve is also ok as long as it cant be heard, which is near impossible...
when i do get around to doing it i have 11 pages of paperwork to go through for approval...

its amazing hay....this wagon went through the pits beginnin of this year with matt,,, and i think they must have been drunk or just very very nice....they didnt have any problems with the turbo conversion, gearbox conversion, lift kit(although they did mention that its a little too high)...and looking at the way the lift kit was built.....im surprised they didnt condem the car to be honest....so yeh...i think its hard these days to know what to expeect

The steering extension is legal if the welding conforms to australian standards .This is the lowest standard there is

you can build a box trailer from a plan out of the packet from K mart & get the trailer lic

it just does not have a motor to power it , but the draw bar could fall off !

I have been building custom bikes , trikes , hot rods for 15 years & never had an issue

Different places... different story. Mate in Rockingham had to remove his 2 inch lift to get it over the pits. They called it a suspension modification.

i went down to the one in warwick yesterday, they guys seemed nice. and D3V1Ls one went thru at east perth. with that one, on the second attempt the inspector picked up the 3" block at the front but still passed it, was more concerned with the rust hole under the footwell, and dodgy reverse light.
when i do get around to doing it i have 11 pages of paperwork to go through for approval...

i got those pages too, and he said fill em out and they might approve the 3" lift, but i dunno, sounds risky.

Took my lib turbo conversion over the pits after i bought it with a yellow sticker, failed 1st time for the front springs not connecting with top plates, tyres a bit low,cv boot/steering boot, too noisy and thats it.
It has turbo timer, boost gauge,no papers from the previous owner re conversion.
Got the same inspector 2nd time around and he was pleased that everything was done properly.
That's in Kelmscott.
