gearbox oil question

Post by artrixx » Tue Sep 26, 2006 11:05 pm

got a gearbox thats has a bit of a crunch when going into 3rd and 4th nothing too bad at the moment but it is annoying. im thinking about dropping the oil out of the box and refilling it with automatic transmission oil , i've heard that the lighter oil helps gear changes. the car is almost totally a road car with only the odd 4wd trip up to double island point. would it be a bad move?? any advice would be gratefully recieved

Caltex RPM Borate EP68; a GL5 oil that constantly amazes me and my mechanic friends with it's ability to sort out baulky gearbags, esp. transaxles. Bit exy coz it only comes in 20l drum, but if you can use it or split a drum with others it is well worth the approx $130. You might find some used in the road transport or earthmoving sector, maybe you can buy a smaller amount. It made my virtually undriveable 5sp D/R box useable again. I couldn't shift 2nd-3rd without graunching, no matter how slowly or carefully I tried. Now it's not perfect, but the gearbox can stay in until something wears out or breaks

redline does the same thing its dear as well $100 od dollars for 5l i think....but it does work and last for ages 150000km i think they say something like anyway maybe more.....it is hard to say if it would fix your box but it depends how far gone it is sound like syncros arent that bad so it should help.
Its not defant fix but no oil or additive is remember your only prolonging the problem....That caltex stuff sounds good and it is cheaper....
