Snatch Strap life??

I wasn't sure where to post this but i thought here most suits it.

Recently i heard that a Snatch Strap should be replaced after 10 uses... Is this standard or could the strap in question be a little dodgy. For un-biased feedback i wont tell u what store has it.

I've just been watching the DVD that came with this months 4wd monthly. they say that it needs to be discarded after about 20 uses. so i guess a few dollars each snatch will cover the costs then

crap im up for some payment then (damn unlifted wagons).

even though dave says for un-biased feedback, uve probably worked out the strap in question is from supercheap. but it doesnt matter coz its not one of their brands-like my last one which has frayed after 3 uses. im still not gonna buy it tho as planned.

I'd stop using it when it gets a tear in the side. A little bit of fraying won't worry a Subaru. It's not like we weigh 2 tonnes!

Replace it if it starts freying or you can see a different colour stitching coming through.

just rinse in water only no detergents or any thing as they ruin the fibres

well dave......id say your snatch strap is fairly past its use by date...AHAHHAHHAHA most of its life went within about 30 minutes...lol dave

I recall talking to you about this AGES ago. My 2c

Washing with no detergent is ok and machine is alright on gentle cycle.

As for the strap and how long it lasts yes a Subaru does not weigh 2t however (really basically) it has more to do with the dirt and grit that gets in between the fibre of the strap and then ‘cut’ the strap when snatching.

Also no one has mentioned the recovery time that the strap requires in between snatches, as this will also reduce its life.

I also think the quality of the strap that you start with will also have an impact on its duration.

I've heard a good technique is to rinse all the sand and grit out in a big bucket of water then dry it in the sun. Also it is good to store the strap in a loose-weave bag in the boot of the car so any remaining sand can shake out over time.

Sorry Andrew however i do not see how a loose weave bag will be of any assistance... if the sand can shake out then sand and dirt shoulod be able to shake in shouldn't it?!?!

I didnt think Curlie ever needed to be snatched out, especially how he drives up everything in High range.

Alot more sand will shake out than will shake in. Gravity is a big help in this regard.
I havn't actually done this myself yet but I'm just passing this suggestion on as I've seen it in a couple of different 4x4 magazines a while back. It makes sense to me.

Of course the best method of keeping your strap clean is to just use Matt's

the hessian/loose weave bag idea is a good one- why else would 4x4 shops sell them too?
i reckon the hardest part is how to hang it up on the washing line

im looking into getting a new one in a kit as my supershit one is just that, supershit. any good priced brands that people have?

Supershit lol i brough my first snatchy from there i got exactly one initial stretch out of it before it was rooted.

We (Qld Subaru Club) have our snatch straps supplied by.... ill get back to you on that one.
