EA82T rebuild parts

Post by r00fi » Mon Oct 02, 2006 8:32 pm

Yet another head gasket gone :(

I knew my $250 EA82T wasn't going to last, but it probably only cost me 25c per km......

Any recommended suppliers for an EA82T rebuild? (other than Subaru....)

Looking for parts, pistons (not forged), rings, gaskets, bearings...

...and services in melbourne area - decking, valve grind, crack test, etc
Subaru RX Turbo (engine out AGAIN!)
Ford XF Panelvan EEC-IV (rusting)
Ford Escort RS1800 GP4 (in pieces)
Van Diemen RF89 (Sold, finished and racing)
Softride Powerwing 650 (working fine)

Repco have stocks of stuff you will need but they do not have STD bore pistons still available only oversize so boring would be in need if you where to go that way however now would be a good time to think weather an EJ22 would be worthwile as the cost would be similar

Like the idea of an EJ2x turbo with Megasquirt, but the cost of EJ engine / box / tailshaft / diff along with re-wire, re-plumb and re-exhaust has got to cost more than rebuiding the EA82. Doesn't it?

EJ adaptor plate is appealing too, but there is still the cost of re-wire, re-plumb and re-exhaust and compliance

since when would you normally expect to need to replace pistons? piston rings yes, but pistons?

Since when an EA82T starts making smoke it is more likey a piston has issues than the rings

All the engines I've rebuilt in the past have have been bored and had the pistones replaced (all of them Ford).

I've never really considered not doing it. However if the EA82T is renowed for getting great life out of bores and pistons then I'm happy not to go the extra expense.

At this stage I don't know the condition of bores and pistons so I've just assumed the worst.......

They generally have no issues with going out of round and needing a rebore but if a motor has had a hard time you will find the pistons damaged and in need of renewing in which case unless you get some from another source generally you have to bore.

Ford and holden engines always need the whole shooting match done when rebuilding as a rule of thumb.

Looking at the Megasquirt - 2 for my EA82T. Going to be on the backburner for now, but will be looking into this myself sometime.
