Friday night pines action(+ some nice damage)

Post by Alex » Sat Jan 06, 2007 7:45 pm

hi all,

geez, what fun we had on friday/saturday...(very long story..sorry!)

D3vil Dave and i set of for 4muffs house at about 6ish, and with plentiful supplies of beverages we tried to get 4muffs leone back on the road, AndrewT came with a whole new manifold, and after afew drinks and abit of swearing/tinkering with hoses and whatnot, managed to get it to fire, but to no avail, she needs abit more 'sober' mechanics put into her...

We then went to the pines...our group consisted of a 2wd rodeo, a BRAND new(8000km old) jeep wrangler, and myself. Geez that wangler is an absolute tank off-road! very very impressed indeed! We made our way to the mudpit, and whipped afew heli's etc etc, and then we parked the rodeo, and did abit of soft sand action, the wrangler cruised through, and so did i in the L-series. Did afew BIG hill climbs, and i was very happy with the performance of my car, and managed to keep up with the wrangler in most places.

We where on way back to the main road when disaster struck, the poor old subi, which had just done sooo friggin well, got broke!...we where doing about 70 when i saw a big dip hit the skids...but neh the suby came out second best...with a severely bent radius rod, and the lower control arm was twisted to the shit, in the action, the wheel kicked backwards into my fender denting the shizen out of it. We sat and pondered for a while, and decided to try and remove the radius rod, and straighten it. That wasnt going to work, we stripped the bolts holding it in place, and it was time for a re-think..

we dicided not to tie a strap to the radius, and just yank it with a car, and just rang a tow TRUCK!...after about an hour the dude rocked up, and dragged my poor baby up top(see pics), this was at about 5am...we dropped the car off at 4muffs house, and parted with way too much money for the tow ($270)...........got home at about 7am.

Then later that day at about 2pm we went back to 4muffs and surveyed the damage properly(yes it did look very bad!)..Dave did most of the work, and had the bent radius rod and control arm off in no-time..we then went into 4muffs plentiful supply of parts of dragged out a new radius rod and control arm...shoved it all back in, re-did the popped CV, and smashed the panel abit..hey presto..suby fixed!

1. Thanks a hell of alot Dave and Brendan, much much much appreciated fellas

2. Time to take a break from the pines!

heres a pic with the bent radius rod still on the car
it took lots and lots of time with a grinder and gympie to the the radius rod off, also discovered the ball joint had broken, inner cv joint had been pulled apart, and minor bending of the radius rod bracket. once we took the wheel off to inspect we could not get it back on

Wow that's crazy, I've bent plenty of radius rods, but I've never seen a control arm bend like that! Glad it all worked out in the end ( especially for the tow truck driver :P ).

Damn I missed the fun. I had stuff to do after midnight, was expecting to rock up then leave for the pines but ah well.
I had a spare radius rod, control arm and complete front drive shaft in my boot too (as always).

Shoulda tried pulling it roughly straight with a strap on the Wrangler! Worth a try and might have saved that huge towing fee...
Solong as it pulled the wheel out of the guard it woulda been okay to tow it behind a car back to Brendons at least.
At least you have a good excuse to replace that bent guard now - I remember it got slightly creased already on another trip.

I bet your still glad you came anyways and didn't stay at home being soft!
