forester motors in L-series.
forester motors in L-series.
hi all,
got me thinking the other day, with all these foresters on the road, why have i never heard of a forester converted L-series or MY? surely their motors would be abit more torquey than the lib motors etc etc...(or am i a dumbass and they all run the same motors?)
just abit of curiousity, as im looking to do a conversion soon..

Most foresters have a 2.0 litre motor. Should have slightly less torque than the 2.2 from Libs that most people use.
I guess they will be used more often in conversions as Foresters get older and start getting parted out more often.

Yes, you're a dumbass90subiewgn wrote:(or am i a dumbass and they all run the same motors?)

The Forester EJ20 is a SOHC 2.0 like the SOHC 2.2 in the Lib.
As they're a smaller capacity & not being a performance motor, they have less power & less torque.
Best NA 4 banger is the 2.5 DOHC, followed by the 2.0 DOHC, then 2.5 SOHC (though torquier than 2.0), then 2.2 SOHC, 1.8 SOHC, 1.6 SOHC.
The current 4 cylinder motors are still basically the same as those released in the Lib in 89 so the newer the better. The new 6 cylinder EZ30 though bears little resemblance to the EG33 in the SVX (needed to be made smaller to fit into the Lib without lengthening the body).

The 2.5 in my parent's MY04 Forester XS is an SOHC EJ25, apart from the electronic throttle actuator and a few other tiny bits it looks exactly the same as my sister's 1993 Lib EJ22.
How can the EG33 be better than an EZ30? The EZ is a 10 year newer design. It is much better than any EJ/EG engine.
04 Forester is cable throttle unless it is an XT turbo.

The EG33 is the better motor in my opinion as it has more displacement and a better exhaust manifold setup.jzk25 wrote:How can the EG33 be better than an EZ30? The EZ is a 10 year newer design. It is much better than any EJ/EG engine.

Just double checked - it is an 8/2004 Forester XS and it has an electonic throttle.

Plus, the car the EG33 went in had the car designed around it, not the other way round like the EZ30. There were compromises made to the later 6 so it fitted in the hole of the 4 cylinder.tim_81coupe wrote:The EG33 is the better motor in my opinion as it has more displacement and a better exhaust manifold setup.

I would just like to say a newer design is not necessarily better, the design objectives are different- the main one I think is "produce it cheaper"How can the EG33 be better than an EZ30? The EZ is a 10 year newer design. It is much better than any EJ/EG engine.
I doubt that 10yrs ago anything less was known about building engines than today. - just my 2c to this debate?
BTW,I reckon the SVX styling is nice and a bit unique too. Are the any in Aus?

yeah ive seen a few getting around ova the years they were a dud but... not a very big seller i think its the way they look subaru have had few stying problems over the years...just look at the new tribeca im yet to see one drivn around...even the new forester looks a bit funny the old one looked better just my opinion anyway...
2011 Forester X
ive seen a couple SVX's around here too. and i was watching a police car chase on youtube laqst week with one that eventually ended in a golfcouse lol. couldnt find the link but there is a few svx vids on there
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=subaru+svx
also there is a tribeca living on my street now, im still getting used to the styling.

I'm not saying the EG33 isn't a good engine, it is. I am saying that it isn't a better engine than an EZ30. I am mainly talking about the EZ30R from the Gen 4 Liberty not the Gen 3 engine too. The Gen 4 engine has all new heads that have 6 exhaust ports.
The advantage of the EZ30 is the block design. It is far more advanced than an EJ/EG engine. I have worked with the EZ engine a bit and it is an awesome design. It is 10 times more complex than an EJ engine though which seems to be a necessary evil these days.
I think we will see a modular EZ 4 cylinder engine replace the EJ in teh next few years. They are flogging the horse with emissions on the EJ now, the new 2l dohc engines even have air pumps(think 80's corona) on them. Yuck.
Are you sure the forester isn't an MY06? It has to be to have electronic throttle because MY05's do not(except for XT's). Pics of throttle body?
03-05 NA Foresters use a hybrid version of the old gen 3 engine management system, it is a simple map sensor based system. The MY06 fozza got the 03 Gen 4 Liberty engine management with electronic throttle etc. The performance difference is noticeable.
Wagonist - The gen 3 was always designed to fit the EZ engine, it has a much longer engine bay for this reason.
At the end of the day the EG33 does not fit easily or practically in to anything but an SVX(or Kombi) so is not much use.
No disrespect to Steve Rising Sun but mounting the radiator on the bullbar or in the tray is not easy or practical for a daily driver.

There are several things I like about the EG33 engine:
Lower compression ratio, still with a fair whack of performance. The EZ30 runs, what - 11:1 compression? 10.5? Point being, it's dependent upon PULP to make its power, and not ping. The EG33 ran lower compression and still made 170-180kW on regular ULP.
Design: the EG33 is a 7 main bearing design, and non-interference - there is clearance between valve and piston at TDC with valve open. That means no bent valves or such if the timing belt breaks.
I haven't had much to do with the EZ30, but I am a believer in displacement. The EG33 is simply a bigger engine, and from what I've seen of both, seems to make its power a little lazier than the EZ30. I could be wrong, though.
What I would LOVE to see is an EZ33 or even an EZ36 - something with a bit more displacement. I think something like a 3.6L boxer 6 would be more suitable in a car like the Tribeca.
Just my opinion, though... no gospel involved.
Would an EZ30 fit into an older Subaru? I heard that design-wise they were only 40mm longer than a 4-banger. I'd love to get hold of a WRX or something and do a twin-turbo 6 cylinder conversion. That would just be insane. Or just insane...
