engine mount options?

Post by TW83 » Mon Jan 29, 2007 10:34 am

Has anyone used the ea81 mounts to mount an ej22 in an my? I am being told that if I use them instead of the ej22 mounts the engine will sit further back in the car giving me more clearance between the radiator.

I know it wont be that hard to test myself but I dont have any on me so would need to get them from the wreckers.

Any ideas on whether the will fit/work/ etc

Cheers

I modified the mounting plates on my EJ16 to use the EA81 mounts, reason for this was so no crossmember slotting was needed. It didn't sit the motor back further, however theoretically you could drill the hole anywhere on that plate.

So yeah, it could be done but when I did it I lined the motor up to exactly where it would have been on EJ mounts.

u actually don't HAVE to slot the crossmember to make it fit... but it does make it easier to remove and refit the engine if you do. Usually 5mm on each is plently so u can use the EJ mounts.

I found spacing between the engine and the radiator was not a huge problem for the fan... even with a tripple core radiator. The factory fan found on MY's that had air con fit rather well.

in a L series if you use the L mounts on the ej bracket it 'll pull the motor back 20mm,you just got to bolt the mounts on the front hole of the plate. You might be lucky and find the MY is similar.

Arrrgghhh!! It is so tight in mine. Im scared ive f#@%ed it up some how. All we did was slightly slot the crossmember and drop it straight in as in the write up. There shouldn't be a difference even if different boxes are used.
My car is at a panel and paint place where many ej conversions have been done and just about everyone who comes in gos "**** the engines sits heaps further foward than those other ones!"

Ill give the my mounts a go when I get the chance. Another 20mm would give enough room for fans, get the weight back further and the tail shaft will have enough room to compensate (currently a bit too short).

I seem to be having this problem too. ^^^
I'm not sure which mounts are on my EJ20.
Is there a way to visually pick the difference between EJ20 mounts& L mounts?

Moving the engine back would mean major work to the stabiliser link, tailshaft & gearshift linkages. something I was trying to avoid by buying a pre-converted one...

yep the L mounts will have one bolt holding to the metal mounting plate on the motor the ej ones have 2.thats how you get the 20mm, 2holes to chose from when using l mounts.
