WA - Whats up with Jaffa.
WA - Whats up with Jaffa.
To the BYB crew I feel that I had better post something in here…
It could serve 2 purposes, 1) an update about what it going on, and 2) a balance that the EA82(t) is not the worst donk on the market…
It is not 100% yet, however it would appear that the idle/miss problem that developed on cylinder 1 (around the time of the Romeo Rd trip) could well be a shot internals. This is still not 100% however the car has gotten progressively worse and now stalls 99.9% of the time at idle. I am open to suggestion on what it could be, however I am becoming less and less hopeful.
I have though about EJ power however I will be staying with the simple option and that’s another EA82T… IF I can afford it (and there is no warrantee) then I am seriously considering intercooling while its out – just do not tell the boss, I know she will LOVE the extra ponies but its always about the $$$.
Its been a good time with the old donk and we have almost been together for 10 years (testament to the Subaru Shop I reckon). She has seen many many laps of the auto cross track (at Willowbank) not to mention some of the ARC and WRC stages (a few less of the latter however that will change), numerous trip to the islands off the Qld coast and the North NSW area/dirt. In addition to this she has roared across massive chunks of the country's tarmac and now more recently the Perth tarmac and surrounding 4WD area.
I will be sad to see her go however I am kinda hopping that I can learn more from her as I might even try and strip her down and rebuild myself (undecided on this 1 as it’s a huge job).
What does this mean… hopefully we (Jaffa) will not be off the road long, as apposed to off roading, and back out there (off-roading) with you.
I will update as things happen as I am thinking that after doing Subarino’s car in record time I might have to lean on a few of you to do mine (or it will be more $$$)

Jaffa I will help out as best I can. While I can't really offer ultra-cheap parts prices, I am good friends with several engine reconditioners and I'm willing to donate my time to see the JaffaMobile back in motion.
EA or EJ it's up to you, obviously the EA is cheaper, although the EJ isn't too hard to set up in your car
. You're halfway there already
.
You might have some problems trying to find another EA82T, I was going to put an EA82T in the coupe before an EJ20T, supply problems meant I went EJ (ok ok, and the extra ponies
)
I'm sure the WA crew will all offer assistance in one way or another.

Hey jaffa, had that problem, and bumped up the idle speed with the idle screw, I knew the problem was poor fuel pump, what I surmise is that at idle, and the pressure being low, the fuel injectors are not delivering atomised fuel - and the wbo2 meter was going crazy to boot too. At higher idle speed more of the fuel is getting used, anyway that was my guess. My pump was definitely older than 10yrs, how old is yours?gotten progressively worse and now stalls 99.9% of the time at idle.
BTW,this motor I got, I was definitely sure had a head gasket problem, but now no sign of it 8O ,even had a running too cool problem

So what i'm saying is don't give up too quickly, may have overlooked something simple.......maybe ignition lead, dizzy cap, fuel injectors etc..

hi jaffa
i have lots off spare parts from my engine that i could send down to you as i have no need for them anymore. i think i have a set of heads ,turbo, ecuand some other small stuff that i'm unsure of what it does.
if you want anything its yours you just have to pay for postage which should be cheap if you can pick it up from toll west in kewdale.
give me a msg if you want anything.
mole

Thanks for the support all - well except maybe for Muddy :P lol
Tim the parts thing is ok... i do not expect anything outher then good service and the right part = both of which i know i will get when shopping with you.
Fred-Sub thanks for the advice, i will dbl check stuff however this is an ONGOING issuse that has been getting worse for the past few months. Lots of stuff has been thrown at it (in an attempt to find a solution). Even at boost she is now questionable.
Postie i would have been thining that however she has been solid for 12mths and no signs of leaning out (from what i can tell) aznd i have been in touch with the Subaru Shop as well - got them stumped without seeing her as well.
Mole thats for the offer I'll let you know.
AndrewT, Trouble is i have been told that compression test (having 1 done) will not alway show shot valves. Its al up in the air still but it is looking like a replacement job-e... on the phone again now to the east coast.
Oh, and yes the EA82T are getting V HARD to get.
Thanks for the support I'll keep you updated

So what the latest…
At this stage we are still unable to determine what exactly is going on with this engine – once I get to the bottom of it I will be sure to advise. In the mean time we are currently nursing her along so to not cause any further damage. In conjunction with this I have brought another low km import EA82t and she is being freighted to WA (I hope) as you raed this, that way IF she does let go I have another 1 ready to go, therefore LOOK OUT

:P L8a...
just to add to the ea v ej battle.
My B4 has developed a very serious knocking noise.. i think i will start calling it a B$. Anyway any of you WA crew any good at diagnosing what this noise may be, id really appreciate some opinions even if you just want to have a look.
So im back to driving my EA82 wich despite not being serviced for almost 4 years (40k) and boiling 3 times atleast, mixing its oil and water refuses to actually stop working. I mean it was still doing 120 down the freeway last night without trying.

OK, it would appear that after several months of head scratching the diagnosis is… Blown head gaskets 8O
Yes after 2 tests 8O yesterday the flagon has a blown head gasket
...
I know it is not really showing anyof the triditional signs of a blown head and at this stage I will not know were it has blown until???? The initial plan is it to swap the engines over and then see how bad the original engine is.
Therefore, despite how very anil and anxious I am about this, I am thinking that I should get to work sooner rather then later. Those that wish to get their hands dirty you know where I live, and i am sure that we will be catering this event
I’ll get specifics on here once I know more as I am thinking that this will be a prime opportunity to do front shafts and that bent lower control arm and radius rod.
Thanks - L8a...
