Hey 90brumby,
If your going to drop the EJ in and a 5 speed why not go the EJ dual range box at the same time?
This will save time in the construction of the adapter plate. That said, you can spend that time on changing the low range to the L series low range: There are posts here to show how to change the EJ 1.19 low range to the L serie 1.59 low range if you want to go that far (from what i've heard it's recommended to do this if looking at some fun off-roading). And you get the advantage of AWD, in a brumby i'd imagine that'd fast become a quick car with all 4 wheels driving...

I haven't split open a 4sp yet but looking at the 4wd gears and knowing they are very similar inside to a 5sp I would think a 4 speed in good condition would be alright. Although if your reverse gear is already poping out sometimes you will most likely have a problem there.. The 4sp's reverse is weak.

We have completed a few EJ conversions to MY series 4 speeds and have not had any trouble with the 4 speed box handling the power, any gearbox will break if you abuse it, however after a few months we are usually changing the 4 speed out in favour of the 5 speed.
