Forester 2.0L 1.44:1 low range

Post by PeeJay » Sat May 19, 2007 12:43 pm

I was just looking at http://www.scorpionsubaru.com/low.htm and they mention that there is a Forester box that has 1.44:1 low range, out of a 2.0L. Are these boxes easy to find? How would I identify one?

How easy is it to find a Liberty dual range in good condition? Also, I'm assuming the Forester box is 4.11 rather than 3.9?

Liberty's come with 1.19, you have to fit the 1.59 gear set out of the L series to get 1.59. I was talking to a guy a while back that said he got some 1.7something gearset for his forester gearbox. He was in a 01 model I think.

I'm with you here PJ. I too want to know what the diff ratio is in the forester box -> 3.9 or 4.11... It would be real handy if it was 3.9, but knowing my luck this won't be the case.

As fang and Phizinza have said, i'm sure you have to take the L series low range to get 1.59 low in a lib/forester gearbox.

Cheers

I've got 15" Outback wheels on my car so I realy need the 4.11 box to keep the gearing reasonable. With my 3.7 box it's out by 16%. Apparently you can get the 4.11 bits out of an early JDM and fit them to the lib box to get 4.11 with 1.59 reduction. That would be very nice.

I've been thinking about doing the same just reciently. Why not just get the forester box, chang the low range over and stick that in. I realise if your running the EA motor you'll need the adapter plate built in reverse to the EJ motor to EA gearbox.

I think only pre 96-97? boxes fit the L series low range. None of the 8 bolt ones do, and some of the previous years 4 bolt ones don't either.

Perhaps I'll just get the newest box I can find, stick the scorpian low range in it, and miagrate that box to the next car when it comes along...

*sigh & felt embarrased* Yeah you were right, I must've been looking at the wrong chart - Liberty with EJ22s did come with 1.19 Low Dual Range, the EJ18 Legacy (could be Impreza?)¿ had 1.592

Now I am bummed as for whole time I believed that I had 1.592 and thought wow thats great! now I want 1.592!!!

What kind of modifications do you require if you get Low Range from L series in Liberty's EJ gearbox - is it straight forward job?

AlpineRaven, this might help you out, its located here, there's a lot of other talk going on and it's pretty messy, but you should get the idea of the change. Otherwise do a search of it.

Notes on pics (to fill the gaps incase you don't already know)
The dedent is the part that the EJ boxes use for the retainer spring to keep the hi/low range selector in place, the L series don't have these. The L series selector fork will need a small mod to use this dedent.
MY_STI wrote:After some delay here are some pics, hope it makes things a little clearer.

Image

The case on the left has the extra bit for the detend welded in.
Something I forgot to mention before is that the L 1st/2nd selector fork doesn't fit on the lib selector, fortunatly the lib selector fits on the L selector shaft.

Image

Close up, not real pretty but it works, spring and ball go in the hole.

Image

Lib low range selector fork is on the left, you can see the extra peice welded onto the L selector on the right, although its not quite in the right spot.

Image

The low range selectors themselves, L on the right, Lib on the left.

Image

Upper lib gearset in an EA case, the peice on the end will have to be changed to the L item for L low range, again, interchangeable.

Image

Just for fun, a dry assembly of the ea cases and ej extension housings.

Happy Gearboxing!
Hope this is of some help.

Foresters and Imprezas did come out with a 1.454:1 ratio if you can get a forester box they are already geared to the 15in wheels so would make a nice addition to an EJ powered L series or into a lifted Liberty

I was reading yesterday the 81-84 4 spd DR transmissions had a 1.4x low range . Do these gears fit the 5 spd L box ie RX-T ?

Cheers A .

No, but normal L series low range (1:1.5) is a bolt in replacement for the L RX and AWD boxes (normally 1:1.1), I've done that one myself and it's great! You just swap the input shaft and low range gear straight over, no mucking about.
