Pulley wheel keeps falling off

Post by Gannon » Thu May 31, 2007 6:24 pm

I have just rebuilt my ea82t and i cant get the crank pulley wheel to stay put, the bolt keeps loosening and falling off.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Should i use locktite? or maybe a spring washer?

Thanks

Are you doing the bolt up tight enough? Dunno weather i would use loctite as they can be pretty hard to undo normally without it.

use red loctite - it'll do the job.

yes i had this problem with my old EA...douse it in the strongest loctite you can get, and do it up sooooo tight. Get some mates the rock the car backwards and forwards whilst you tighten it..

mine only came off when doing doughnuts tho :D

not finished mine yet !! but i found the roll pin was eating into the pulley making an oval pin hole so have redrilled two new holes and fitted two new roll pins to fit through into the timing belt cog on crank. I use silicone/silastic to hold these crank bolts from comng undone. Locktite and the like makes 'em real hard to undo if need be.

The way i do it is put the car in 4th or 5th gear, pull up the hand brake and use a breaker bar with the right size socket and pull until i can't tighten it anymore. Also works for removing the bolt...

Never had a problem with my crankpulley bolt coming loose using this method.

I put a pin in the flywheel then tighten with a normal 1/2 drive ratchet and never had one come off as long as its pinned to the cam gears or to the crank it shouldnt come loose.

Im not all that keen on loktite as i may wanna get it undone one day

What about a compression washer/ spring washer

if you do it up to the correct torque (which is bloody tight) then i cant see a spring washer doing much except gettin squashed flat lol i thought they all had a huge washer on them normally anyway which can take the torque..
they shouldnt need locktite on them to keep them in if there done up enough
