XT6 AWD - info wanted

Post by El_Freddo » Wed May 30, 2007 2:34 pm

Hey all,

Out of curiosity, is the XT6 AWD gearbox a single range 3.9 ratio? Dual Range or single range? And can this be changed into a dual range gearbox by changing the input shafts/top gearsets if its a single range?

And would an XT6 flat 6 fit into an L series no worries? I'm having evil thoughts but only know of a car on the other side of the world (and the $$$$ factor keeps flashing - only thing that keeps me at bay)...

Just a thought that i had.

Cheers

You come up with some doozies Freddo.

If you can find a pic of an XT6 engine bay and compare it to any other Vortex you will see that it would take a lot of work to fit an ER27 into an L series.
Imagine an EA82 with 2 more cylinders and you will get a good mental picture of how long it is.
Scott from subarubrat.com put one in his Brumby and then mounted the radiator horizontally under the bonnet.

LOL Bennie - my sick mechanic mate wanted to do the same thing with my engine bay - but he also wanted to put a Holden 6 into my old XT130 Corona!

You might be best posing questions like that on USMB. As far as I know - they are 3.9 and are single range only. As for the interchanging, I dont have a clue.

Well, when you got nothing better to do i turn to my car and see how else i could make it stand out from the crowd...

I thought the XT6 would sorta have the same engine bay as a vortex which pretty much = same as an L series...

Seen an XT6 on ebay in the states, rusted out, still runs, and asking $US300, but then the killer (if i had the money to do this) would be shipping and maybe import tax...

Ah, well, i'll try a little harder for you next time brumbyrunner, you seem to be doing a pretty good job yourself on a crazy machine (i like it by the way)... keep up the good work ;)

If 1st to 4th gears are the same ratio as an L-series you can swap in just all the stuff except the low range and input gear shaft with gears. 5th gear can be taken off the XT6 box and fitted or you can use the L series one. Or if they are the same, just don't touch it.
If 1st to 4th have different ratios you will want to know if the input shaft can have it's gears swapped off both the FT box and PT box. Sorry, can't answer that one.

i dont think mounting the radiator horizontally on top of the engine is such a crazy idea, whether its fixed to the bottom of the bonnet or mounted like a top mount, would need a nice scoop and some decent thermo's and could probably only be pulled off with a decent size lift kit, possibly 4" minimum. with the right plumbing you could easily mount it on the underside of the bonnet so you dont have to remove it every time you wanna play on your engine. I'd also imagine it would need a large scoop to cover the height and width of it to get the best air flow.

Has anyone done this before? or am i just crazy thinking? coz with out the need to put the radiator in the front, that opens up the options of going a 3ltr flat 6, or possible the new 3.6ltr tribeca (??) engine.

subarubrat.com. the guy told me you need 6" minimum lift kit. But I'm sure you could work about it with less...
I've also talked to someone a bit who left the radiator in place when they placed a ER27 in a EA81 hatch and said it fitted without fans. Not sure if they got it running and everything. I think the problem would be hooking up the hoses.

I put a ER27 into a Brumby with the radiator on the roll bar behind the cab, and a EG33 into a Liberty with the radiator through the grill/bull bar. http://www.risingsuncarservice.com.au for pics. I'm half way through a EG33 into a Brumby with number 2 son.
