a carby or fuel injected engine...
hey all, i already posted the same post in general but i thin here it's best.
which is best for a l series station wagon going off and on road:
a carby setup
or an injected????
i hear the injected blows the head more often.
also do automatic transmission come with hi/lo rang?

Go MPFI (The worst MPFI will alway give better performance/economy then the best carb) The technology has moved forward for a reason = My quick 2c.
Toyota 105 Series LandCruiser (that nobody on here wants to really hear about).
RX Touring Wagon - fitted out for 4WDing (currently collecting dust).
RX Project - will be road only at this stage (and currently taking way to long to finish).

Ditto to what Jaffa has just said - couldn't put it any better.

Thats why you instal a larger battery or add another battery before you get serious offroad.
Wil (Postie) has a great setup for an auto, he has the EJ22 and later model (read; more robust and reliable than an L series auto) 4speed auto. If you where to aim for this setup buying an EFI L series would be the best start as that comes with larger fuel lines and the EFI pump and wiring.
With this setup you gain with the power of the later model engine in a lighter car as well as the fact that you dont loose as much in overgearing with the larger tyres.

efi auto L ,usaully a touring wagon. You get power windows, pwr mirrors and steer, vitara maybe not come with these? .Then when its time to play maybe a ej20T auto front cut. With mine i brought every thing seperately, ended up with 2g/box's to get one to work and now am rebuilding my ej22 but am still happy with the cost and setup.
Another sugestion would be a cheap awd auto liberty. Then its only a lift kit and springs.

Hey Learner,
I've just rebuilt my MPFI and i couldn't be happier with this engine. My L wagon was converted from carbie to MPFI and i had a steep learning curve in the process. Looking back i would have spent a little more money on an EJ conversion (without a rebuilt engine) but didn't know about it at the time plus i would have spent more time piss farting around to get it working properly - the new L MPFI loom was enough to deal with let a lone splicing in the EJ loom...
I'm also still running with the original steel carbie fuel lines without any troubles that i've noticed - all the rubber fuel lines are EFI rated. I would like the MPFI fuel tank (has baffling in it to stop fuel sloshing around and starving the fuel pump) so always run a good half tank of fuel when out for a small trip. Surge tank is high on the list...
I don't know where you heard that the injected EA82 blows head gaskets more often than carbie jobs but i believe this to be a myth.
Power from the MPFI sh!ts all over the carbie job (in terms of the EA82 "power"). The last MPFI I was running had an unknown amount of K's on it, blew smoke sometimes, blew air (and oil) out the oil filler cap and rattled a lot (not bearings, it was just a noisy engine). This engine still performed better than my sisters carbie L that had an engine in better condition. Now i still enjoy the feeling of being pulled up a hill with the rebuilt job...
And i reckon you'll end up with two L's before you can say "i'm going to change to an manual" - it'll be a "his & her's" thing...
Cheers
