The machine that goes "ping"

Post by mroberts » Mon Jul 02, 2007 11:43 am

EA82 - stock

Coasting downhill (engine braking) makes it "ping". Is this normal ?

Otherwise seems to run fine.

What can I do to fix it, if I need to ?

It's more of a metal on metal tapping sound than a "bang"

find a quiet downhill spot (just a genrtle slope) to roll down - forward preferably, with engine off and listen. Does it still 'ping' ?

No = stumped.

YES ! = tailshaft uni ? grease it , maybe replace it

Only happens with car in gear, clutch out, no throttle. If I give it a bit of throttle (not even enough to make a difference to speed), it goes away - it's pretty much only on serious engine braking.

is it some kind of constant pinging like when on serious braking it happens frequently or kinda only once through each gear

The engine braking causes the engine to lurch forward a little. I would say you have something loosing hitting on your gearbox, or exhaust or engine somewhere, or something which is possibly mounted too close. Could also be the exhaust is too close to the tailshaft and is touching sometimes. Look at the tailshaft for any shiny metal parts indicating rubbing.

It's a constant pinging. I'll have a look at the tailshaft over the weekend.

Also inspect the uni joints in the tail shaft. I had one that was worn so badly it was partially comming apart and rattling under slight load. Pushing the car harder put enough load on to stop the rattling.

Or a hydrolic lifter, the oil pressure for some reason drops a little and allows some lifter tick at that speed. My old engine used to do this occasionally.

Any noise at idle, or similar noises on a cold start up?

The lifter tick is a different noise :)

Tailshaft would seem to be unlikely since this is happening in FWD mode, so there's no load on the tailshaft either way.

Yeah but it's still constantly moving...
Any chance you could post up a recording of the sound?

I had a simlar problem... replaced all the CVs all the wheel bearings and Uni joints... but didn't fix it. Was a metal grinding noise.

Turned out the engine stay rod wasn't right and the motor was leaning forward making the alternator rub on the engine fan. Fan was a good 10mm away from it when i wasn't putting strain on it.

Ive got a tinny sound at high revs that comes and goes, I was worried it was pinging but when the clutch was replaced I noticed the top of the cat (heat shield?) is flaking ,rusted and loose, Not sure if it's the same as your problem but doesnt hurt to check.

I havent noticed the sound with engine breaking only at high revs under load, Mine makes the usual old exhaust farts and pops under engine breaking.
