Hi all,

I am having trouble getting 1st, 2nd & Reverse in my Brumby (86/EA81).

The clutch is taking up v.early (poofteenth off the floor) and I need to really push the pedal to the floor to fully disengage.

a) Is the clutch self adjusting (a-la holdens circa mid 80's) or can I adjust the thing myself, and,
b) whats involved in fixing it if its not a re-tightening jobbie - how many $$, what tools etc.

a) the clutch is not self adjusting... the adjustment is near the clutch fork under where the spear wheel should be in the engine bay.

b) Many ways of replacing the clutch... you can fully remove the engine or gear box... or i have done it with both in the car by simply just pulling them apart but this can end up taking more time. Removing the motor is what we did usually... very easy to do with them motors. Good idea to remove the radiator first though... and mark the polution control hoses if your un-fimiliar with them.

Maybe only need a screw driver set... socket set and spanner set. Also either an engine hoist or 2 blokes to lift the motor out. A clutch alignment tool is handy but we used to do it by eye.

Cost changes alot depending on if your going to get your old stuff re-conditioned... beafed up or simply all replaced... can vary from about $50 to $400ish. Be aware not to over beaf the clutch cos then ya start snaping clutch forks.

How much adjustment is there and what is the limit to the adjustment. There is about 5mm of thread left on the rod.

Took up about 3mm of thread and she now snicks into gear like a rifle bolt.

Edit - I shoudln't have spoken to Brumberty. I am now looking for an EJ22 + 5 speed box and running gear to put in the old girl.

so time to set a mental note: need new clutch soon...(2 sizes in Brumby, biggger 9" costs double) new cable is also a good measure.

yes i justy changed over my clutch as yyou might of read - i also had o replace the gearbox which was easy enough buttook a little time to do.

As a newbie to this site I've found it great but now have a prob with my 91/ea81 Brumby, it needs a new clutch no problem until the bloke at Coventry asked which one, I haven't been able to find the identity of the clutch is it a 225mm one of is it the 200mm one.
Any help would be appreciated as I just don't have the time to pull it out then wait to order the right one in.

Not a good idea to guess at it, should be 225mm as l've only ever fitted small clutches to single range gearboxes. the 2 also have a different spline count.

My 84 baby has a 200mm clutch but given its history who knows if it is original. Expected to find the cheaper 200 in an early wagon a few years back and it had a 225 . I think a 91 Brumby is likely to have the 225mm in it from factory. Depends on who has done what to it in 16 years !

Thanks fellas, since the 225mm is the dear one I'm sure thats what I will need, have to pull it out and have a look first then do the 60 K trip to the shops, I like to have all the bits then pull everything apart.

Well the '91 Brumby has the 225mm with 21 spline clutch, only $260 from Repco but what a bastard of a job to do, never again, if you don't have a hoist give it a miss even with a pit it was a pain to work on.
