driveshafts
ok this is for my wagon. for those that dont know it: 88 L wagon - EJ20H + 4spd auto + legacy twin spot brakes and 5 stud hubs. rear is fine and assembled- fronts are giving me the sh1ts!!
I have 25spline turbo manual fronts - length is 19.5" shaft length- inner is correct and lines up with the auto box .outer is too big.
I have the legacy ones here and they are 21" long and 22 spline. so no mixing and matching.
L auto looks to be the only alternative as this car is going to be lowered 1-1.5"
what are spline the L auto ones? ( I know where to find a set.)

Theres only really 2 significantly different L series drive shafts. Ones with 23 spline inners and ones with 25 spline inners.
(some turbo ones are stronger etc but this doesn't have any bearing on this problem)
What are the hubs you are running?

outer hub is legacy (for 5 stud swap.) inner can be legacy or L series as both fit. what are the 23 splines on - was going to nab a set of L na auto ones figuring they will be 23 spline.
thoughts.
jono,
I'm working on a theory. I figure you guys raise these things and it pulls the shaft out a bit so length isnt a problem for you. I'm going down and if I'm right length will be more of a problem for me.

23 spline inners are on any carby model afaik.

This sounds right to me:AndrewT wrote:23 spline inners are on any carby model afaik.
carbie = 23 spline
MPFI = 25 spline with inner cup the same size as the carbie cup
Turbo = 25 spline with inner cup larger than that of carbie and MPFI cup
This is info i've picked up from reading, havn't seen any of it in the flesh but i'm sure its right.
Hope it helps.
Cheers

From the 1987 Subaru WSM .
Basically the turbo shafts have 3 rings (2 narrow 1 wide) and measures 242mm between the inner boot clamps/shaft grooves . They can have either a 23or 25 spline gearbox end joint . As an assembly they are known as 95AC-25 or 95AC-23 .
The WSM quotes 95AC-23 for turbo 1800 2WD manual and 4WD automatic . It quotes 95AC-25 for the turbo 1800 4WD manual ie RX turbo .
These are RHD examples from the WSM .
Cheers Adrian .

ok that isnt my problem, the actual shafts are 25 spline (not the cups or outer hubs.) am I looking at this correctly??discopotato03 wrote:From the 1987 Subaru WSM .

and after looking (and counting with liquid paper) I have 22 SPLINE legacy axles. now I need the hubs to fit my 5 stud fronts to match ether with 23 spline or 25 spline L series shafts - more likely 23 spline by the look of things
did the early ones use different spline outers - if I can get a liberty 23 spline outer and a 23 spline inner then I'm set.
thoughts??

no. I'm counting the actual shafts. not the inners or outers. I have the shafts apart and the turbo ones are 25 spline on both ends , the legacy ones are 22.
now the L inners (where the shaft goes onto the box) and legacy inners are the same spline. my problem is actual shaft length of the main shaft. I need 19".25" or there abouts. the legacy ones are too long at 21.5" and I cannot put both shafts on and put the steering together.
considering early liberty AWD auto as that would be close I figure.boxes are the same (4EAT) so the inners are right and the outers will be correct also.
length is my only concern.

after a 15 minute conversation with driveline services in archerfield (scott) I have sorted this mess out!
solution : legacy outers & inners - L series FWD (IE 22 spline) main shafts - done! that nets a 19.25" shaft with the correct ends

now to sort the rear one out. how short are these things when you put the turbo ends on 1-2" ?? looking at a shaft swap to fix the problem.
