Inner Workings Of L Series Gearbox

Post by Subafury » Tue Jul 10, 2007 10:58 pm

Sort follows on from this thread - http://www.ausubaru.com.au/showthread.php?t=6600

After a few attempts at cracking open my old gearbox by hand, i finally got out the big angle grinder and opened her up. So here are some pictures of the insides of the box

Sooba_dooba sean and i were trying to work out how exactly gears were selected and how the low range ratio gearings work. from what we worked out the top part of the gearbox housed the low range gear and that was about it. If someone could shed some light on the matter for curiosity's sake?
and could someone draw onto a pic which gear cog is which? i already know second because that one is munched! lol couldnt work out the rest 100%

thx matt

This will probably confuse you but I'll go ahead any how.
The input shaft (from the clutch) has a synchro that either connects the gearset shaft to the input shaft or connects the gearset side low range gear to the gearset shaft thus bringing the power through the secondary low range gear shaft.

1st 2dn and reverse are machined into the top shaft to swap them its a hell of a lot less stuffing round to just get another box

or u could see if the subaru dealer has a shaft on stock $$$
