Cam Shaft removal questions

Post by Matt » Sat Jul 14, 2007 11:53 am

What is the easiest way to remove the camshaft and followers on a EA81?
Can you replace the cam without pulling the pistion out?
Do i need a waterpump gasket kit?
Does anyone have any pics of an EA81 pulled down? Where the cam sits etc?

Hopefully early next week i will be putting in my Dual Port heads, Modifed Cam, Solid lifters and new push rods! And just want to make sure i have everything i need, so i don't have to wait for parts. So far i have VRS kit, rear main seal, oil filter, oil, coolant and my new intake manifold and gaskets, should that cover it?

Thanks
Matty

Ea81 Cam comes out from the rear of the engine it sits above the crank you have to pull the motor and remove the flywheel to get to it

I have not tried SWK's method of pulling it out from the back, but it sounds do-able as that is how some cams go in and out of position anyway, a better short cut to seperating the two block halves, which I guess you could do without piston removal. To split block also need oil pump removal and sump gasket

I thought i read somewhere that you need to split the block to change the lifters in the EA81... i thought this was a silly design and wondered if its actually true.

I will have a play, and see how i go....Also i a have a few house mates that owe me a few favours for some certain engine conversions, so get it out and pieces shouldn't be to much of a drama. Another couple of questions
1. I assume so, but is the Cam marked at 0 Degrees or TDC? Same for distributor?
2. I would assume if i have to take the pistons out of the bores, they will slide back in?
Thanks
Matty

1. not sure if dissy is marked but some are otherwise just put a line in with wihitout or somethign for the way it should be facing (dont put it on the metal fo the rotor tho)

2. pistons wont slide straight back in as the rings will eb in the way but they will go back in with a piston ring compressor.

Matatak, the marking of the distributor will only work if the timing doesn't change which it could if i have to split the block and reset the cam.
Thanks

but everthting else should be marked for a TDC position but sometimes the dizzy arent so u mark them and get them back in exactly how it came out when eerything was on TDC and it will work without guessing which way the rotor was facing when the dizzy came out

dizzy has marks and so do crank/cam cogs for reassembly.

I think lifters fall out of head if you tip em, so block not need to be split for changing lifters

Thanks alot for that, if you could do a pic from the other side and maybe top and bottom, if it isn't to much drama.

Cheers
