Trip Report (Dial up warning): Mt Sugarloaf & Eppalock area

Post by El_Freddo » Mon Aug 13, 2007 3:02 pm

Hey all,

Last thrusday i organised a tank of fuel (not hard to do sometimes) and a couple of mates for a day out in Ruby Scoo.

We started off at Mt Sugarloaf near Axedale, central Vic. The tracks up there start at gravel stuff to the seriously monster truck extreme (only a few of those thank god).

My little Ruby Scoo Subi is standard height. Only mod to this car is the MPFI...

I got down a track pretty easily,

my mate didn't think i'd have a chance at getting even half way up but showed him that more than half was possible.

My problem here was lack of diff locks, as sitting on two wheels was what stopped me at this point (above).
We spent some time playing around here, the surface was quite soft and the road tyres easily dug holes...

Later down the track we played breifly on an old dam wall:

This image above is on an angle, the car wasn't quite like this...

We cruised around the area getting a taste of different tracks...

...before one of my mates got bored and wanted mud. We found some holes that other people have used, i don't have photos of these yet, but it was a bit of fun for a little while. then we moved on to "lake" eppalock...

Before this pic (below) we had travelled around the area a bit, got bogged in a small valley but got out (thank heavens, we had no recovery gear except a snatch strap). There were some great gravel (ball bearing size rocks) tracks around here that were fun and the soft wet soil in the area made 4wd drifting a ball!

After playing around here we wanted out but couldn't be bothered back tracking... we got "lost" through a heap of carvan parks and back roads before my mate told me he knew where we were. Back on the main road for a little while before we detoured to the Knowsley State forest...

This area is where we found an awesome camping spot that we intend to make use of soon... It got me thinking that we could have a camp/meet here (i know its close to me but i found it...). 2wd access is possible and day outtings to mt sugarloaf/eppalock or the forest is easily possible.

I'd love it if we could organise a weekend for this area, i have a photo of it but not with me at the moment. If anyone's interested, i'd love to hear from you.

Hope you all enjoyed our day out, it was a blast and i only used a third of a tank, even with all the hard revving/circle work we did that day...

I hope to upload more pics as i get them.

Cheers

I'm waiting for my mate to get his rangie on the road then go out for sure. I'll get something organised for after exams maybe, as the semester is starting to move along quickly for a weekend away.

Other than that we usually organise these things during the week and have a day sometime that is spare, if you're interested in making the journey up here for that you're more than welcome, as is anyone else who wants to come.

I'll keep you posted.

Cheers

I'm in bendigo - Mt sugarloaf is about 15 mins away near Axedale, with Eppalock being 15mins from axedale and about 30mins from Bendigo if you go directly there - also depends on which part of the lake you want to get to...

I think there are also some good areas out near Heathcote but i have not been out there as of yet.

There are some surprising areas around here that i'm just starting to find. The one above with all the pics at Mt Sugarloaf was shown to me by a mate whom i went to uni with, he loves his rangies but doesn't write off the subi's like most other large 4wder's.

Another mate and I have recently been putting fuel in the car and randomly taking tracks... found some good stuff, poor stuff (typical dirt road) and some interesting areas. Best part is that these areas are around Bendigo - apparently "the city within a forest", which most of is now National Park to stop development bulldozing remenat parts of the box iron bark forest around here.

Back on track, i love this area, i can go and do a quick half hour to an hour 4wd to get my weekly fix.

I'd love to take a group of subi's out for a weekend in this area, there's enough just locally to play in for a weekend alone...

I'm defenately saving for a lift and thinking of forrester sized tyres would be a nice combination, after that it will be diffs etc. Just gotta check with insurance mob first...

Cheers
