Newbie checking in and after info on a 92L wgn
Hi,
Currently looking at purchasing a 92 sportswagon 'enduro'. It has 236000 on the odo, is manual, has service history and looks in pretty good nick.
I am asking the experienced on this forum for things to check for and any inherent problems with this model. They are asking $3999, reasonable?
I would also be looking to get rid of the hub caps and put on some sunrasier rims, I notice some models came standard with these, and as such would be interested to know where to get them and what size to get.
Looking forward to finding a suitable vehicle and getting it set-up for light - mod' 4wd'ing and touring.
Cheers in advance for any advice:):

Hey. You are in very similar circumstances to what I had when I bought mine. Similarly to you, I bought a 92 enduro with approx 220 on it. Unfortunately the timing belt just randomly went, but you cant predict that.
If you can get it cheaper than $3999, I think it would be reasonable. No harm in pushing.
As for the sunnies, they either come in 13" which were standard on some model subarus which have pretty much correct offset, and they also come in 14" which were not standard, with an incorrect offset. The 13"s are no hassle, but the 14"s often rub against guards and stuff under tight radius cornering or bumps unless you have a lift. The 14"'s also stick outside the bodywork, meaning that you needs skirts to make it legal, i believe they also widen the wheel track which makes them illegal but meh. The 14"s look better, expecially on an unheightened model.
You can either buy them (dunno where) at a store, or get a set of second handies off the for sale section on these boards.

Check around the windscreen for rust, I think it's a pretty common place for it. Other than that check the usual places: storage box in the rear, bottoms of quarter panels and doors, firewall, tailgate etc.
For that price is should be in very good condition, id get a mechanic to inspect it to make sure theres no problems. I bought mine which is a 89 dl last year for $900 from ebay with 206,000k's on it, it needed a windscreen tyres and some rust in the firewall removed for rwc, it also needed a clutch I think it cost about $2200 all up (i cant remember it was a slow fix) to get it all done on the road and registered.
Ive put 10,000 on it and have only had a few very minor problems, a stuck open thermostat and a bolt coming out from the gbox mount, the bolt was our fault from when the clutch was replaced.
opps just read the experienced bit, well thats not me im just parroting what ive read on here and else where, but i do know mine has some rust in the windscreen surround and had rust in the firewall

I think you can do better due kilometres and age/price...
as what dave said above about rust - very important but its common problem.... for $3999 you could buy dual range AWD (full time 4WD) Liberty.
Cheers

Hey scoobiedoo,
Also check for rust under the spare wheel, sometimes you find it here where the spare has rubbed the paint away from not being bolted in properly and the rust gets in.
Check under the car for dings from 4wdin, might give you an idea of what its done off road as i believe that the km's on these things aren't that accurate as it does not tell you how long its been offroad in low-range...
Other than what's been said thats about it.
I love my L, it has a Multi Port Fuel Injected EA82 that's found in 4wd touring L's, and 2wd sedans.
It would be worth checking out a Liberty as Alpine Raven has suggested, i personally prefer the shape of the L, but also like the drive train of the Liberty (which can be fitted into the L with a bit of know-how and fun...).
At 300,000km on the clock, these things are considered "run-in"...
As for accessories such as the sunraiser wheels, you can get them later, just shop around till you find something you're happy with (and that fits). The 14's that the click talks about are aftermarket jobs, think they're called speedies (could be wrong, someone will know). Its all personal preferance...
Where are you located, even if its just what state you're in?
Welcome to the board, we'll catch you around.
Cheers
Bennie

ElFreddo,
Cheers to you and the others for your welcome and the welcome info!
I'm in Geelong in Vicco...I notice your in Bendigo, cool joint, went to uni there and enjoyed the mountain biking, nightlife and this cool little dirt track between mcivor hwy and strathfieldsaye...It was great fun in my old sigma wgn:)
Put an offer in this morning for the 'L' but the bloke won't budge on price...The condition of it is rare but at the price think I'll look elsewhere, in no rush so I should find myself a goodie eventually:???:

Just bought an 'L'
Just bought an 'L':)
Paid full price...Seller would'nt budge!
I think the condition (MINT) and the fact it had a full Subaru service history were in the sellers favour.
Pick it up tomorrow:p
Cheers for all the advice...Plenty more will be required once I get to lifting and wheeling it;)

Scoobiedoo, nice ride you got there... I can see why the guy wouldn't budge, but i think you got a good one at a good price (as i've said earlier, seen them for $5000)...
To answer one of your questions, the tank is 60 litres, i've only ever fitted 57 in but i was still able to drive the car with that amount left in the tank (very gently mind you).
Km's per tank... with those k's and a light foot you could probabily get 600 or more (depends on how low on the E you want to go... mine seems to have 10 to 15 ltrs in it when on the E).
Hope you enjoy your L, looks very standard.
Have fun modding her up and keep us posted!
Cheers
Bennie

Thanks mate, I'm rapt. Have to do something about the wheels though and the bar it came with is bent...looks as though it has caught up on something when reversing. It's similar to yours El Freddo but has a lower loop covering the indicators. I prefer the look of yours, what type is it? Yours got any lift?
