Thanks, will probably go this way and am interested to know approximate charge time...How long would I need to run the car each time and how long a drive would it take to recharge fully (sealed 100amp hour).BYB-01 wrote:You can get a good quality battery box from Battery World for around $60 that comes with a cigarette lighter attachment. Add in another $200 for a 120 amp hour deep cycle and the solonoid/dual battery set up and you will never have a problem with it.
It is an excellent way to do this as when you go camping you can just lift it all out of your car and sit it in the tent or shade some where. Simply back the car up to it every now and then to charge the battery up.

Plan to wire this from the vehicle battery through to the portable battery box with 100amp hour sealed century batt'. All up cost should be about $500, providing I can do the wiring...You guys will hear from me re the wiring as I have absolutly no idea

Go into a jaycar/leading edge electronics and (assuming you don't get a trained monkey) ask them about solid state relays.
The amount of power these things can handle is crazy, no moving parts, no welding or magnetising of contacts, very impressive, take this fella for example.
Jordan.

To add a little to what Vincent was saying.
I have a ammeter and I notice even with my EJ alt (70amps?) when the battery is too flat to start the car it only charges at around 24A for about 15mins then drops back slowly to 15A over another 15mins and by the end of the hour it's back down to 7-9A. So although the alt is 70A charge, you'll be hard pressed to get that much out of it unless you have a few hundred Ah of battery and they were completely flat.
