Engine vacuum lines

Post by The Bigfella » Thu Oct 04, 2007 8:12 pm

I'm installing an EA 82T in a VW Beetle (its an import engine I've had for about 10 years).

I've got 4 vacuum connections I'm not sure about.

Two on the intake manifold runner to cylinder 3 - fairly close to the injector. I've got no idea what these go to. Can anyone help please - the tech manual doesn't.

Another on the gearbox side, just behind the throttle body. I'm fairly certain that this is for the auto kick-down, so can just be plugged.

The fourth is with the fuel delivery and return lines - and I'm pretty sure this is just an evaporation line from the tank.

Finally - the canister has only three lines from it - the fourth spot is plugged, but the manual says that this line is used in the Turbo car? Can anyone shed any light on this one please?

Ian

A bit vague but.....one near the tb should be auto kickdown.the 2 near cylinder 3 might be the ones that go to a set of vacuum operated switches for boost light on dash.the 4th line on the canister goes to a switch/sol which tees into one of the 2 near cylinder3.Got any pics of the areas concerned?

No pics tonight - but I'll take some tomorrow if I can.

What would that be doing I wonder?

Here's a shot of the two that concern me the most:

looking at the pic the one on the right is for the brake booster and the one on the left with hose attached goes to the sol/switch.

The one at the firewall side of the throttle body going skywards on the RHS is the auto tranny sucker. The ones in the darkish pic are where my vacuum booster line fits (about 10mm outer dia) the smaller one goes to the pair of boost vac solenoids one of which controls the boost light on the dash - the other one may kill ecu if over boosted ?

Ahh - brake booster...... Duh! Don't need that on the Beetle, with only 750 or so kg.

Many thanks for that mate.

I'd love to see pics of this fitted into the old Vee Dub when you get it done!

I was doing some consulting work for some (very) senior coppers when I bought this thing (mid 90's) and they weren't impressed when I told them what I was doing. Incidentally - the biggest reaction I ever saw from them was when we were walking down a city street and someone gave a roatary a rev - their necks just snapped around.

maybe coz they'd had rotes in their youth? A heap of old school mates 'turned' and joined the force - they didn't ditch their rockets or driving habits afterwards - just had better money to buy better/faster. Be inneresting to see if things get better when Victorias top cop quits, her deputy/assistant used to own a screaming sleeper !!
