So what do you blokes think...could a well presented WRX hold its own in a race like bathurst..I mean against the holden and fords..for 161 laps and turning out those sort of speeds on conrod straight..would it make it more interesting like years ago when Bathurst welcomed all makes to the challenge??? Any thoughts...
Never happen as the Holdens & Falcons were being embarrassed by the Ford Sierra's and Nissan's GT-Rsubybrumby wrote:So what do you blokes think...could a well presented WRX hold its own in a race like bathurst..I mean against the holden and fords..for 161 laps and turning out those sort of speeds on conrod straight..would it make it more interesting like years ago when Bathurst welcomed all makes to the challenge??? Oh yeh, I still recall that race well, Ford Siera turbos,1,2, win & second,
just killed the rest of the field. Down the straight the turbos just run off........leaving the v8s for dust:p
the only time the v8s had any chance of catching up was going up the mountain.
So they changed the rules.
The following years it was Jags, 1,2 (v12 right?)
Changed the rules again.
So the rules now is simple (Holden or Ford) and v8
The race is generally boring now too, except with the televised the expos as of things that go wrong mechanically and the pits are the only things that interest me some, the racing itself.....no, rather dull except for crashes.
The variation of mechanical ability between cars are very marginal....hell I can't really tell whats a ford or holden even if they didn't have signs saying so
.
So I think the race has changed from being a race between cars per se to rather just a race between drivers. So its driver mistakes that that end up loosing the race......what do you think? as a sport is it a good thing? are we more interested in what driver did this or that ? or what brand car did this or that?....

I'd love to see a race like this just for interest's sake. I'd also love to see a bathurst run where the cars are factory sports items with a roll cage installed and see how they go in regular "trim"...subybrumby wrote:So what do you blokes think...could a well presented WRX hold its own in a race like bathurst..I mean against the holden and fords..for 161 laps and turning out those sort of speeds on conrod straight..would it make it more interesting like years ago when Bathurst welcomed all makes to the challenge??? I think you are spot on Fredsub, I worked out western Queensland for many years and missed a lot of Bathurst due to limited TV. I therefore mostly relate to the earlier days of Bathurst when there was all makes and models.
When the top 10 shootout now see cars coming to within 100th second, there is obviously not much difference between them...
Driver error, mechanical endurance and pit action is really all that makes it a visual sport now I think...that is why I wondered how a WRX might stand against these so call V8 Supercars...thanks mate

Leave the V8 series as it is. I to liked the old days however now motor sport is a very different beast… just look at the issues surrounding par-it-y over the last few years.
You fellas are aware that there are other categories of motor sport in this country that basically DOES have various makes and models (including the WRX Sti's) all competing on the track at the same time… which is exactly what your talking about. They just have different classes and/or timed handicaps to make for a more “equal” playing field. Basically long storey short its just that it does not have the support and tv time that the V8 series receives.
That’s my 2c.

Toyota 105 Series LandCruiser (that nobody on here wants to really hear about).
RX Touring Wagon - fitted out for 4WDing (currently collecting dust).
RX Project - will be road only at this stage (and currently taking way to long to finish).

...naa to slow ^ i think.
V8s should stay as is, i agree with BlackMale, If want to see what your describing you have to dig a little deeper into the telly quide haha or where ever...
A perfect example of all different makes and models on the mountain up against each other is the 24 enduro... and you get 24hours of it

In idea me and the old man had a while back was that if the 380 mitsu came out as a rwd like it was rumored to be, let them put a chrisler v8 in it and let it compete just to shake them up.
let the stoning begin (brumby boy runs and hides lol)

So Bathurst fields the top teams (& top $ sponsored teams)....surely there are more teams deserving than just Holden&Ford teams?
so how did it come to pass that it is now a v8 series???
Whats the chances of having 2 races/yr with the coverage of Bathurst, next to nil.....
you can have your v8 series, but the Big race ought to be the dogfight among all of them.

Yes,But Bathurst is the culmination of the Motor Sport (like the Melbourne cup, sure theres other races, but it the Melbourne cup that "stops the Nation")El_Freddo wrote:Yep, fair call. The race idea with factory cars i was talking about would be a sister race to the bathurst race. Could run it the day after the big race - so long as it was telecast like bathurst is...
