If it's not the rocker cover, it must be a head gasket.
If that was from the engine (combustion chamber) you wouldn't see out the back window.

oil leak

Post by rtcb65 » Sun Nov 11, 2007 5:10 pm

Just a thought, could the bolt that the leak is on , could it have broke through into an oil gallery and the oil is running out via the thread. I have come accross stranger things. But before considering this idea, i would check out other peoples ideas and also find out if there is an oil gallery in the head any where near there. I know there is a water gallery there some where, just not sure if there is an oil gallery. As you say that there is no oil coming from the other places you have listed, that is what gave the above idea. It is more likely rocker cover or head gasket.

I'd say it's a standard factory-fitted option on must Subarus. Usually will be seeps around head gasket or rocker cover gasket.

Get a quality degreaser in there and scrub it down as best as possible perhaps with a dustpan brush etc, then watch closely over the next few days. Also perhaps use a different oil next time, ie thicker might help to see where its coming from esp if u use a very thin one now.

So true - I'm about to do my head gaskets to replace the O rings in the oil passage as they're leaking more than I am comfortable with.

Cheers
