EJ coil packs

Post by Chris_Rogers » Sat Dec 01, 2007 6:32 pm

how do you tell if these things are dead? I have them all out and have spark (at 1-2" away from the engine) but I'm running on 3 cyl occasionally. have pulses at all of them . plugs look worn but usable.

how prone are these things dying?

where do I find them new and cheapish?

Well from my expeience when coil packs go their gone they dont just come back to life, at all I have heard of plugs doing that though only failing when hot or under pressure etc and for the price of them it sounds like they need to be replaced anyway (I know they can be a pain in the arse to replace) But while your there quickly check the injector connections.

Also by looking at the plugs you should get a better idea on which cylinder isn't firing!

drivers front was a bit different in colour. car would run fine above 2500. but drops a cylinder at low revs.

looking at intensity of spark they are different. have injector pulses on all of them and 13.85v on the rails of the injectors and coils. cleaned a few earth points on the car for good measure.

going to get a set of 4 as one of them was discharging out of the side and two others were cracked due to heat so they are getting replaced.

ijncetors have been pulled and the needles have been pushed down so they are not stuck.

still stuck on this..

Well unfortunately all I can say without looking at it is good luck but you should be very wary of pulling leads off while the car is running the leads have a lot more bite than they used to. I say this way to often but did you check for fault codes, and it wont be the leads but if you have a multi meter you can see how good they are any more than 2 ohms and their cactus.

this is the exactl same problem alex wagon has....an intermittent miss at low revs below 2000 rpm......

They are reliable but once you start to experience a problem with one then change it as they (single coil pack per cylinder) never really die they bull**** fire alot then the smoke eventually comes out. The 4 oulet single coil packs will have a missfire on one outlet only when they are about to croak. But check your leads first by swapping them around as the leads can be the cause not the coil pack.

mine are coil on plug. unsure what the resistance is supposed to be on them.
Matatak wrote:sorry...im thinkin of my EJ22 with 2 coil packs. and 2 leads coming off each coil to 2 different plugs.

urs will have a coil on top of each plug wont it?

check the coil out for any signs of shorting where it goes to the Plug. can happen but unlikely.
think I saw that on one of them actually.

DEVIL,

its annoying. at speed it runs fine at idle it develops a miss. heat seems to be a probelm here. even with the vent on the bonnet the engine is still hotter than I would like it.

SWK,

coil on plug, have used spares here but I think they are suspect also.

When I first got my frontcut it had 3 dead and 1 dyeing coils. I replaced them with Bosh MEC716s. (could have been HEC716?)

so was any signs of shorting?? cracks in the "leads" that culd short out ont he head. usually noticable
(i no they aint leads but i dunno wt else to call the part inside the head where it connects to the plug)

two of them cracked when I pulled the rubber boots off. so they are stuffed. I dare say thats where half my problem is. the other half is plug related. bought $70 worth of plugs for it (platinum) so I'll see if that addresses that side of it.

I'm out of room to put things in it otherwise I''d have external coils on it.

As for plugs, if you are going to run a decent amount of boost then i would not recomend running Irridium plugs, i managed to destroy a set in less that 10000ks in the RX. I am now back to standard ones at the moment.

I was quoted $180 each for them. ended up getting them out of NZ for a fraction of that.
