Most importantly, does your trailer have brakes? and do they work?
Ive towed a 3x4 box trailer full of wet dirt (woulda been close to 1/2 ton)
The road was wet so i used 4WD.
But i wouldnt tow much more without brakes.

Don't bother doing with it mate.. If the weight of behind you is excess than your car - is way too risky and dangerous. I am telling you from experience. (Had bricks in un-braked trailer coming down from Kinglake via St. Andrews and i lost control due black ice and the weight of the trailer was excess (1.1 ton) and wrote off the car, trailer is fine)

But seriously, yeah, you're much better off getting somebody with a far bigger vehicle to do it. I've done it on a few occasions (moving my RX7's, bringing my Gen1 Lib home, Moving Alex's Gen1 Lib etc). My mate's car trailer is about 1 tonne unlaiden, do the maths!
You really have to keep your wits about you and plan far in advance for things like....slowing down.
It's definitely very illegal - the towing vehicle is supposed to weigh at least 1.5 times as much as the total weight you are towing behind you.

I towed a car trailer with a dismantled shed on it along South West HWY behing the stocko 1981 MY, EA81 in summer too for about a 250km round trip. I sat on 100kmh unladen and 80 on the way back. Mind you there were no real hills on this journey. Was a bit of effort to get off the mark, but did it ok.
My brothers Landcruiser blew a uni-joint the day before, as this was going to be the tow vehicle.

I know its not L series, but while we're on this topic of what will happen if you have an trailer that is over your car's weight....
Here are the photos of what the overload trailer did and black ice as well which cause to jack knife the Liberty & trailer. Photos tells you all of what kind of damage would happen with overloaded rated trailer for your car. I choose to write it off because its AWD and it was banana shaped and the frame was twisted and the repair was $8500.
Cheers
