You'd really need the 2.5litre turbo to come in a frontcut complete with a matching rear diff.
Hm heres a few things off the top of my head

- If the 2.5turbo frontcut is also an Impreza (wrx sti i guess) then you'd want to use the entire dashboard and wiring loom from the frontcut.
- Strip everything out of the engine bay of your impreza and also all it's dashboard.
- Transfer everything from the frontcut's engine bay and dashboard, everything should pretty much bolt straight into your impreza
- You may need to custom mount the centre bearing of the tailshaft to the body of the car
- You will need to source a rear-end from a 4wd impreza...you will need the rear driveshafts and hubs and the rear diff that you got with the frontcut
- Upgrade the fuel pump

If you are going to retain fwd and just want a bit of an upgrade in power , your best bet would be an ej 20 or an ej 22 non turbo , if you ran an ej25 turbo with just fwd you could be asking for trouble.

No reason you cant put the 2.5 Turbo in and have it FWD. once again the easiest way is to replace the front loom section with a turbo one. Get one from a 96 to 99 on as the plugs will match up with the rear and the rest of the stuff. adapt the early engine loom to the 2.5 and get a decent clutch. dont know much about the 1.6 gearboxes but they should mate up with enough room.

Its all doable as BYB01 had a TT FWD for ages and never broke the gearbox
