EA81 air intake

anyone that has an EA81 in their suby would know that the air intake system isnt the best. i was thinking about doing a pod filter conversion to get more flow through the engine. ive looked at the system thoroughly and its rather strange. i was wondering if anyone has done a similar sort of conversion or has some knowledge on the subject. cheers.

Could just modify the current air filter and attach it to a rexy scoop? Actually maybe I saw it somewhere. Might end up a rough ride though unless you upgraded carbies.

I'll try to take some photos of my set up, I just have a 9inch round sports filter on top of a weber carb. Not the best for off road, but breathes well on road.

You can't get any more air in than will fit through the carby throat.

A mod I made for my dual carb EA81 motor. Never used it in the end on the DC but used one on a mates L series.

Just 90degree bend 60mm PVC pipe from the hardware store. Thread extender, drilled the centre out of a 25mm long 10mm bolt and threaded it to the carby thread then for a short piece of threaded rod to extend.
Drilled some holes in the sides and heated up brass fittings, then screwed them into the holes for crank case vents and PCV. Siliconed a 75mm PVC storm water pipe to the end to take pod filter or snorkel pipe.
With the carby gasket its water tight.

Phizinza, that looks perfect for what i have. i havent go the dual carby tho(less work for me i spose lol). the pipe looks like its at a fair height, does the bonnet close properly with this?? and would the length in tube from the filter to the carby affect performance in any way? i.e. longer tube = reduced horsepower? where might you think i should position to pod filter to maximise cold air intake. cheers.

The oval shaped air filter has a fair bit of surface area, i doubt you could improve it much more.

Yeah, I chopped a couple more holes in my original airbox to get more air flow in. No use having that much surface area with only a tiny hole into the airbox.
CAI is the only thing you can improve on with the original airbox, cut up a bit, IMO.

I had 2" lift and there was more then 40mm clearance.. Not sure if it would work with no lift or not.
My plan was to have a square airbox sitting right behind the carbs that those two pipes went into then have a scoop on the hood for CAI. But plans change and you grow outta that "cool looking" thing.

was there any noticeable difference in throttle response/torque/power etc after you made the holes in your original airbox? where might i be able to find spare airboxes because if i cut up the current one itd be nice to know i had a spare stock one just in case.

I have mine running in through a wrx scoop. And guess what, NO rough ride. If wont info , PM me.

You can just drill a ton of holes around the sides of the original air box, this gives it a fair bit more air. Otherwise I like Phiz's solution as a way to get a pod filter going.

Not noticeable. Might show up on a dyno, but nothing that you can feel. Although my airbox was missing the tubey bit from the beginning so it already had a hole about the size of 1 carb intake. The tube bit on the stock airboxes appears to get smaller at the inlet side. Makes no sense to me. Maybe a "silencing" effect?

Do you have a U-pull It or Pick A Part wrecker around? They are pretty cheap for those sorts of parts usually and its fun to go round pullin the stuff yourself.

i'll go and check out some wreckers when i get a chance. theres not many of these sorts of cars in the wreckers tho. people love them and dont wreck them! does anyone know if K&N do some sort of replacement filter and or system thing for the single carb EA81's?? i cant find anything on it on the net and the guys down at autobarn had no idea either.

In our U-Pull It I find perfectly good bodied EA81 and EA82 wagons all the time. Pop the bonnet and so much for the reliable Subaru thing. They all got more oil on the outside of the engine then in. Some times you even see brand new leads, rotor, cap and plugs. People try to make an old car go but then giving up I guess.
