auto gearbox noise

Post by Chris_Rogers » Fri Feb 01, 2008 11:02 pm

box is a 4EAT behind a EJ20 HD (for those that do not know my car.)

it has developed a rather loud whine similar to a bad PS pump. gets worse with throttle.

WHAT THE HELL IS IT and how do I get rid of it??

box still shifts fine and I have been keeping an eye on RPM and it sits a 3k at 100kmh (4.44 finals 205/50/16 ) and it seems constant and hasn't increased.

been reading service bulletins and I noticed that they (subaru ) changed the seals and pumps (revised) for some reason.
any idea why?

lastly - who can actually service/repair this box?? Parts are not an issue. I can get all I need from NZ.

"it has developed a rather loud whine similar to a bad PS pump. gets worse with throttle."

mate thats how I originally described the noise and you said no more like a rattle.

seriously thats EXACTLY how i described the noise mine was making under throttle. Your oil pump is being starved of oil, either through a dented sump limiting pickup flow or through leaking seals elsewhere letting air in.

yep. like i said, i pulled the sump off and it looked fine. then measured everything up and realised it had zero clearance on teh pickup.

hammered it out 15mm and its been fine since.

I will pick that brand new sump up this coming week. Will send you measurements

will,

ta! will drive it up there before it dies.

dane,

are the sump gaskets the same as the local ones. going to drop the pan tommorrow and give it a hit with a 4x4 block of wood and a mallet.

other thing (I figure this is related) is it is slow to shift into R & D gear first thing in the morn. once its warm and moving its shifts 1-4 easily.

how quick should this thing shift - immediate?

how long before it kills the pump? (if this is the case.)

dont drive it mate.

I did about 100km with noise only under load and my box seems to have survived, but i have no idea how long it will last...

these boxes can shift a little funny until warm. I think its pretty normal.

that delay for R and D when cold generally indicates hard seal, O-rings. My 3 speed also does it, it sat around for years. One of the better brand tranny seal conditioners may help when added after new fluid.

Chris,

have sump here now. will measure up.

they dont use gaskets anymore, just use sealant directly between box and sump.

the guys posty was referring to:

GMF automatics
32056676

Speak to the kiwi Mike, he was real helpful to both me and posty and did his time working on subaru boxes in NZ. he seemed to know his shit
