wtf gearbox oil disappearing???

Post by Alex » Fri Feb 15, 2008 7:13 pm

hi all,

stupid question?

just took the wagon around the block to fill her up after 4 days of not moving.

The gearbox felt abit notchy into gears, so i checked the oil, NOTHING even registering on the dipstick. This box got new oil about 3months ago, and was filled till registering full at the time.

Where does the oil go??? There are NO visible leaks. (and its not like a gearbox can burn/use oil? can it?)

other members have had this problem as well

Perhaps it registered full when you filled it....but then afterwards all the oil got dispersed throughout the gearbox. Not all the oil sits in the little sump to register on the dipstick.
This is possible if the gearbox was drained completely and left for a few years completely dry before you got it.
Have you checked the level since the first time you filled it up?

Unless you can see where the oil is leaking from i would have to agree with the above comment.

Could it be possible it has been dripping slowly onto the exhaust at some point?

could be dripping on main shaft at the front of the gearbox, have you noticed any 'leaks' on front or rear of the gearbox?

remember we saw some smoke coming off the headers when attaching your bash plate- i think it was from the gearbox drain plug.

Do you have an oil cooler in the radiator tank? Do you have any rubber hoses connecting to the pipes for the oil cooler?

Sorry bout that, I got thrown that way by AndrewT referring to a sump on the box, and I didnt think manuals had a sump as such.

Other than it leaking oil, I have no idea where it could be going, but I would love to find out!
