Liberty Auto Transmision input shaft

Post by austcold » Sun Feb 17, 2008 9:36 am

The imput shaft on the gearbox which the torque converter fits onto has pulled out when the engine was removed.

Problem is I can't push it back in, I have tried with rag and vise grips but no success.

Any ideas???

There is a spring type retaining clip that needs to be compressed Grant & lined up when refitting

if the convertr has cum off the small shaft with th rubber oring on it this will push back in and give it a little twist to lock into the splines.....watch out you dont damage the o ring(it dosent get any drive wot so ever.....
if the converter came off with the 2inch tube then dont hit it it will brake the oil pump drive just push it back in with the converter on it and gently lift and turn while pushing it back in......the converter bolt lugs shold be around 10 mill off the auto housing when fully back....
but watch the seal behind the converter if its nice and hard it will be very easy to brake........:):)

Try rotateing slowly there are lugs that need lining up.

No problems with the oil pump shaft (tube thing that plugs into the converter) it is the centre spline (input shaft) that is pulled out approx 20mm.

Looking at the downloadable service manual it is true that there is a spring pin located through the shaft inside the box.

The drive shaft is hollow and I can see some thing that resembles a pin.

? Can this be rectified without a full Transmision teardown.

OK Sounds like I need to drop the box so that I can rotate it. I am unable to refit the shaft as it is now.

Last time i did one of those i had the gearbox out so i stood it on endto refit the converter but as Wil says ican be done by fitting the little shaft in the converter and gently refitting it whilst slowly rotating.

I took the gearbox to the transmision shop which reconditioned it and they removed the shaft and refitted it. I did not know that the shaft could be pulled out completely and was concerned I would damage it.

However it is all sorted now.

Thanks for the advise.
