seriously just replace the struts with standard KYB items, and the springs with king springs. You will have new car handling again for minimal cost.

Standard height kings will probably lift it. Only because your old ones will have sagged with age. It will only make it as high as it was standard from the factory.

Lifted kings will raise it more again.

What do you do with the rear self levellers?Put in standard struts and lose the levellers?

Yes I'm hoping the self-levelling strut and spring can just be replaced with a standard strut and spring.

In further news, SuperCheap today quoted $173 for the fronts and $98 for rears, KYB.

That is pretty much what you want to be paying for them. Add on another $240 for springs and you have got suspension that is as it came from the factory. You can even pay the $40 needed for some spring compressors and do it yourself.

If you do it yourself, just take your time and keep the spring compressors opposite each other and you can't go wrong.

Hello again

No I didn't do the springs. The difference was still chalk and cheese!

Whether the springs "degrade" or not and how badly can certainly be debated.

New shocks only did exactly what I needed and transformed the handling to what I would certainly describe as "near new".

Mine's a GX and does not have the self levellers. We did look at fitting them but discovered that they mount way differently and the cost that would have been involved to make them work properly was way out of the park for what I needed to achieve.

Here's my current set.

MY13 Outback - The new blue one.
MY99 Outback - As it's maker intended - but with a fresher engine now.
1994 RS Turbo - Not quite so stock! And freshly repainted now :)
And then there's the family Vortex - rebuilt, updated and now unregistered and gathering dust in the shed.
:D

I found the King Springs on the E of Bay. Nice tip. $238.50 delivered.

If Supercheap do rear KYB's for $98 a pair, and Subaru sell Fronts for $160 that totals AUD$516.

There is a US E of Bay store that will ship the same set by air freight for ~AUD$460. Which is interesting.

Bringing up an old thread.

I want to fix my suspension before I get new tyres

I got a quote from Repco today for King springs and KYB struts, came to $1310 so I rang another autoparts shop and she said if I buy the whole lot at once, it'll cost $788

It breaks down to
$170 a pair for the front springs - King p/n KSFR-32
$170 a pair for the rear springs - King p/n KSRR-29
$224 a pair for the front struts - KYB p/n 334276 and 334275
$224 a pair for the rear struts - KYB p/n 341277

Its a little dear for the springs, but very cheap for the struts.

I'll ring supercheap tomorrow and see what they'll do
