my last 4wd that i built and had fun scaring subarus on fire trails:twisted:
full NSW rego. 270liters diesel. 140liters of water. airide suspension on front axle.
self contained for a week with 6 adults. Island cab was cut and narrowed 300mm to fit the chassis.
Great fun off road. Now lives in FIJI as a mobile dentists truck.

Fixed It
OK i fixed it at last:D
the problem came down to the jap import motor has different exhaust cams and these cams have to stay with the block.
When i put the new heads on as per good practice i keep the moving parts together IE the cams stayed with the heads. i don't know exactly where but the relationship between the crank and the Cams is different between jap and Oz engines so when i mixed the two up i created a problem.
Why did resetting the ECU fix the problem? this was because when the ECU was reset it was in an adaptive learning mode. while in this mode it uses base settings to run once it has learnt it then starts to control things. Apparently the injector and ignition timing is determined by both the cam and crank sensor. (this differs from the advice on this forum) once the ECU was controlling things it had a difference between cam and crank that it couldn't reconcile hence my problem.
We picked up the issue by driving with the scanner connected and whenever it was low on power the timing was at 0 degrees advanced. this made us think about the whole timing side of things.
What have i learnt form this?
No matter how fast you have to get the car back on the road NEVER EVER;) use a Jap import motor. It WILL NOT save money. i put a jap motor in when i had little money and time and thought she'll be right. it was never a good motor even before the heads went.
Also Jap imports say 40000ks this is crap the wear on the motor is way beyond 40000ks.
so i hereby add myself to the list of people burnt by the Jap import motor business.
